Everyone knows that iPhone apps are literally ruling the market today. But are we aware of the distinct features exhibited by a great iPhone app? Not a lot of people really know how to identify the main characteristics of successful apps. Following is a list of features that mark a truly successful app.
Creativity
There are so many apps around these days that people are overwhelmed with all that can be achieved with these applications. However, it is a bit appalling to know that most of these apps are really nothing but mere clones of already existing apps.
Don’t be that person. The world does not need another photo editing app. Notice that all the apps that have risen to fame are ones that are truly creative. They are not a reflection of another app in any way. They have their own identity and are so made that they offer things to a user that he or she has never been through before.
Simplicity
Okay, I’m no genius in saying this, but how often have we heard this phrase and turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to it? Simplicity is the best policy. Pick up any successful app and you will see that it is absolutely simple.
The whole idea of using iPhone apps is to have a simple approach to do a lot of things. If you complexity an app then why would anyone use it. Say for example, Angry Birds by Rovio is the most popular app of today. The genius in that app really lies in how simple it is. The app is so beautifully made that playing it absolutely a fun filled experience. People of any age, ethnicity or gender can easily play it.
Viral
Every successful app is viral. It may not be a direct connectivity kind of an app but it surely encourages sharing and connecting. SO most of the apps whose success stories we get to hear are basically ones that involve a lot of file sharing, data sharing or connecting with people enabling them to see what you are doing or what can be done with this app, which further encourages them to download and use the app.
These apps encourage in community building using help from others, creating an environment and other such activities that guarantee a multi person interface. Basically is it the oldest trick in the book. If you want to sell a product, give the customer something to look forward to and he will sell it for you.
User Review
Pick up any successful app. You will find it has an option of feedback. Each app grows in popularity based on level of satisfaction achieved by a user. So when you create an app, its real testers are the users. Intelligent developers take the feedback of the users to identify what will make it better.
When a user reviews with what problems he is facing with the apps, these glitches (as I like to call them) can be immediately rectified, ensuring that a user gets the best from it.
Pricing
Most of the apps that have been crazily successful are free apps. There is no harm in giving away your apps for a price but remembers, people don’t like to spend money and like to go for “FREE” goods. Although we have moved forward in terms of timelines but still, even today, it is best to reassure the people that the best things in life are for free.
Creating free apps does in no way stop you from making more money. You can easily earn big bucks by the advertisements that you may allow on your app. Just ensure that the direct user gets it for free. People love it!
You can also have one free version and another paid version which people can graduate to after a free trial.
Marketing and Promotion
Marketing and promotion make for a large part of how the crowd will receive your app. iPhone app development is not restricted to just creating an app. It goes way deeper because people get to see your app only if you market it in the right way.
See, yours may be the best app in town but if no one really knows about it then no one will download it. Yes, if someone accidentally bumps into your app he may download it, but can you rely on accidents to make a business grow? I would rather not!

For any good product to reach out to the audience right promotion and marketing is crucial. As you have mentioned, even if your app is best in its category what is the fun if not reaching out to many people! The paid apps are seldom appreciated and the free apps are always making rounds in the app market and are by default viral! Nice writing 🙂

Being an iPhone app user, I also prefer apps that are updated from time to time. There are some apps that developers didn’t seem to care anymore and has become obsolete. The ratings and reviews are also important not only for the app but also for the developers.
