When you ask them what apps have they created in your industry then qualified candidates always be eager to provide you with a list of apps they are creating or at least played a major role in developing with links to each in Apple’s App store and Google play store. The ability to understand your industry is essential in developing an application that will meet your customer needs. And you can be able to gauge whether or not they have skill, experience to develop the type of mobile app you are looking for.

How many apps have you made so far?
This will establish how long the developer has been working on mobile app industry. Ask for a list of successful apps, read reviews and check star rating to get a feel for the developer’s work. Which is more important than knowing how long they have been in mobile app market.

You should also test their skills with a trial project and a coding test. Coding tests are easy enough to come by. There are online testing platforms such as TestDome: http://www.testdome.com/
Trial projects should be paid for, as your asking someone to do some work for you after all.

If you want to make the hiring process easier, I would suggest using the programming tests as initial part of it.
