Facebook has announced that it has attained the 500 million user-milestone. This is indeed a great landmark for a Website that is still less than ten years old. The remarkable achievement of the world’s number one social networking site was boosted by around 100 million new user registration in the last six months. It will be remembered that only recently, Facebook founder and chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg said that he believed the site will reach the 1 billion mark. While he might have been accused of being overly ambitious at the time, the one billion target does not appear to be impossible now.

How Facebook Users Increased

In spite of its success, Facebook has had its fair share of competition and controversy least of which bothers around privacy and security. However, the major question remains whether the firm can maintain its success particularly in a world where changes in Internet technology and user-enthusiasm is all but too common. Perhaps a measure of the tough times that lie ahead for Facebook can be seen in other social networks such as Bebo and MySpace, both of which have been struggling recently to maintain their user base and earlier achievements.
