Small businesses are shifting towards VoIP solutions in a bid to save money and increase their flexibility. Last year, a report from Software Advice showed that more businesses were using VoIP that traditional methods, of the 350 businesses surveyed (of companies with annual revenue of sub-£120 million).
The report illustrated that 31% of businesses were still using a landline, whilst 13% were relying solely on their mobile phones for their business communications.
More than half of buyers (57%) asked said they were looking to invest in VoIP solutions for the first time.
The top reasons for investing in a VoIP system were as follows:
- Reliability
- Company growth
- Lower price
- More functionality
- Higher quality
- Better support
- More modern
- Remote accessibility
- Ease of use
- Increased security
Wanting to cut costs and increased functionality were other incentives for businesses looking to switch to VoIP. As a result, small businesses are seeking cloud-based systems.
The report also suggests that many small businesses lack IT staff to maintain their system. Buyers in this area often prefer to hosted solution that they don’t have to maintain, thus cutting costs.

- Caller ID
- Voicemail-to-email
- Number portability
- After-hours mode
- Find me/follow me
- Number customisation
- IVR
- Remote acess
- Hold music
All-in-all, the data from last year’s report shows that small businesses are shifting in numbers towards VoIP solutions.
