The Rise Of Cloud Computing Explained

Cloud computing in its purest form is a device connected to the Internet which uses applications hosted on remote data servers to function.

The data accessed can be software as a service, an app, or even an entire word processing suite. The front end, your device, is connected to the back end, your data, via the Internet.

The beauty of the system is the allowance of any device you own and operate to access your data. Your data is immediately accessible any time you have Internet connection.

Types Of Cloud Computing

• Software as a Service
• Utility Computing
• Web Services in the Cloud
• Platform as a Service
• Managed Service Providers
• Service Commerce Platforms
• Internet Integration

Why has it become so popular?

Cloud computing allows you to use your phone, your computer, a public computer, and an e-reader just to name a few permutations. Shared data allows us to take it with us. Portable and interactive, cloud computing frees us from our computer desks.

Chances are you already use cloud computing even if you don’t realize it. Online mail such as Yahoo and Gmail use cloud computing to allow you access to your mail from anywhere. The App store lets you download applications onto devices that do all their work remotely.

What are the advantages of this approach to information technology?

The cloud works like the electric company. The end user may not know how the applications they use work, or how much computing power it takes to run them, as long as the data flows like electric from the outlet.

The cloud allows redundant storage to prevent loss of data to their clients. Software applications accessed through the cloud need not be updated or licensed, allowing users to work without concern for volume or upgrades.

The cloud allows Internet technology to increase capacity, add capability, and all without adding space, hiring personnel, or buying software.

Can it help businesses to save money?

Because businesses that operate in the cloud can dispense with licenses, they can add workers without paying out more for licensing. They can allow workers to work from home, reducing the need for office space and power.

The business can reduce the need for expensive hardware on site. They will not need a dedicated tech person as they have outsourced managed support to the data centers that host the cloud.

The cloud allows computers in many different locations to work in concert, creating unparalleled processing power accessible by the business.

The future of cloud computing

It might not be very long before the machine on your desktop is little more than a monitor with just enough middleware to connect to the Internet.

Your entire operating system will be common to all your devices at home, at work, and on the go. With the increasing miniaturization of devices, the cloud can follow you anywhere, allowing you to work like never before.

Your device will learn to anticipate you, to know where you plan to go, what you plan to do there, and who you will be with.

@Keith, am I the only one concerned with this development? I can definitely see the advantage of the technology but I also find that having everything located in the cloud makes us all very vulnerable to hackers and/or governments that was to intrude.
