One of the most popular classic video games of all time is finally making its way to smartphones and tablets around the world to frustrate a whole new generation of users and re-frustrate those who remember playing the original when it was still new. The game of Tetris, created by Alexey Pajitnov, has now been entertaining billions worldwide for almost three decades. A new version of the game will be offering a new twist on the old classic and will be available to download onto mobile devices.
The new version of the game’ which is being released in both Android and iOS compatible formats’ is called Tetris Blitz. It gives users two minutes to accumulate as many points as they possibly can. The concept has been compared to Bejeweled Blitz, a game about swapping gems from PopCap, and that was also published onto app stores by Electronic Arts.
Tetris Blitz has managed to provide a challenging and enjoyable digital distraction for mobile users no matter where they happen to be. However, at the same time, it doesn’t pretend to be exactly the same game as the original. Though it is being offered as a free game, there are many purchases that can be made in-app in order to enhance the overall experience.
Tetris is played as shapes drop from the top to the bottom of the game board. The classic version of the game required that the shapes be turned and moved so that complete horizontal lines could be formed when the shapes are combined at the bottom of the screen. That line would then disappear and be cleared, providing more space. Should a complete horizontal line not be formed, then the shapes would gradually fill up the board until it was game over when they reached the top.
However, with Tetris Blitz, the puzzle pieces don’t rotate. Instead, the player simply taps the board where the piece should be placed. Several silhouettes then appear to provide the various options for the way that the piece could be used and how they would appear on the board. The decision as to which one will be chosen must be made quite quickly. The more complete solid lines can be made within a span of two minutes, the higher the point score will be.
The design of the gameplay was designed for people to play using one hand which is an easier process on a smartphone than it is on a tablet. It is focused on speed. Similar to the original, a preview of the next available piece is available so that planning ahead is possible.
As a whole, it is not considered to be the same as the traditional game, but Tetris Blitz is a fun spin on the classic, nonetheless. Are You A Tetris Addict?
