Finally, WordPress has released its thirteenth major version, WordPress 3.0, which can be described in one-word – Amazing! Believe it or not, WP 3.0 comes with fantastic new features that will change WordPress forever. The most noticeable change is that ot the default WordPress theme which will now be replaced by a new version 3.0 compatible theme. Some of the new features of WordPress 3.0 are described below:
Say Goodbye to Cubis
Cubic, the default and rather dull looking WordPress theme, has been retired after 5 years and replaced by a modern and better looking default theme known as TwentyTen. TwentyTen is compatible with all the features of 3.0 and comes with extraordinary flexibility, which includes Custom Menus, Backgrounds and Headers.
The TwentyTen Custom Menu system makes it possible to create and reorder menu items, make multiple menus or sub-menus. It also makes it possible to create shorter navigation labels, to improve SEO, for publishers who have long page titles. The Custom Menu can also be placed in a new sidebar widget at any area of your choice.
The Custom Background system enables you to change the background colours of your theme and also import background images which can be tiled or centred according to your preference. Finally, the Custom Menu Header makes it possible to change the header images you wish. Both custom background and header menu systems come with bundled image samples that can be used freely by the publisher.
Admin Username
WordPress 3.0 now allows users to set the Admin username to whatever they like during installation. The first thing you will notice when you log in is a new lighter look so that you will have fewer distractions to the most important part of your blog i.e. your content.
Help Tabs
The Help tabs are now under every screen to give you assistance and information wherever and whenever you may need it.
Bulk Updater
The bulk updater is a major part of WordPress 3.0. It can be found in the dashboard section and makes it possible to manage and update a Web installation, plugin or theme all in one place and with a single click. The unified updater ensures that nothing goes wrong as it automatically places your site in maintenance mode during updates.
Custom Post Types
The Custom Post feature is now available for developers to create more standard posts and pages for better CMS capability.
Shortlink Support
In WordPress 3.0, shortlink support makes it possible to generate short links on the spot with your favourite URL short link service.
Multi-User (MU) + WP
Perhaps one of the most interesting feature of WordPress 3.0 is its multisite support which will enable it to power “one site or ten million.” Features deferred until later versions, for a future release include, overhaul of user roles and media uploader improvement.
