When it comes to Windows registry repair, there are two main options. Firstly, there is the built-in registry repairing tool of Windows, called Registry Editor. The second option is to download and install a third party software called registry optimizer. There are plenty of software companies offering such software. These software will be able to scan the important locations of the computer like the root kits, application paths, help section, history lists, shared lists, shortcuts, start menu, current user section etc. for the registry errors. There are other important locations which are vulnerable to damage or corruption like fonts section, active X COM section, software section, sound section etc. These software will have advanced features like Deep Scan which can help the user to know what redundant or duplicate or corrupt entries are present within the registry. After the scanning is complete, which usually takes very little time, the software will prompt the user to fix the errors that have been found. Just with the click of a button, the errors can be fixed. It is however advisable to first check which of the registry keys are being deleted, because if accidentally any useful key is deleted, then the computer could even stop functioning!
The other option, that of the registry editor, can be accessed by typing regedit.exe in the Run box and hitting Enter. The utility window that opens next is not very user friendly. With extremely large names of keys and the absence of an “undo” option, meaning no change can be undone, the registry editor is for use only by extremely advanced users. Another big disadvantage of this utility is that one has to manually browse through the innumerable keys to find an error, which can be extremely cumbersome and tiring.
