A drawn out campaign by the likes of ICM Registry to win approval for the creation of a sex domain has finally gone through. The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has given official approval for the creation of porn Web sites with an exclusive Internet domain that is dedicated to pornography. The net overseer gave the initial approval for creating the .xxx domain at a conference held in Brussels last week and a fast-track process will now proceed to finalise setting up the adult-only domain.
Supporters of the decision to create the .xxx domain argue that it will make filtering of adult content a lot easier for Internet users and those who do not support pornography. It is hoped that in the long run it will be easier for porn haters to totally avoid pornographic Websites while porn lovers will also find it easier to consume adult content. Although some others see it as a sneaky way of gradually policing or removing pornography from the Internet.
The next step, according to ICANN, is for ICM Registry to hold talks with leaders of the adult industry in order to gain their backing or sponsorship for the .xxx creation, as is the case for creating new top level domains. If ICM Registry succeeds in convincing adult film practioners, the .xxx domains should go live early next year (2011). Already there are reports of over 110,000 pre-reservations for the .xxx domains.
Talking Point
How can having an adult-only domain be justified? Do you think adult movie makers will agree with its creation?
