As the smartphone war rages between Samsung and Apple, the Korean manufacturer recently announced that its European line of cellphone would boast a new addition for its May launch: a 6.3 inches display model! It seems that it will feature a 720p screen resolution and a dual-core processor of 1.7GHz, coming with a RAM of 1.5 gigabytes. We’ll be talking about a storage of 8 to 16 GB. This would make the Galaxy Mega this biggest smartphone to exist on the market as of today, even beating Huawei’s Ascend Mate smartphone.
Skeptical comments so far
Readers who found the news on Mashable’s tech blog had mixed comments on the report. A lot of people seem not to understand why the main phone producers are fighting each other to build bigger and bigger screens. Why would you actually get a smartphone that doesn’t even fit in a pocket? Some users of the Galaxy Note (5.3 inches display) have reported that they could barely bend over with the product in their pants, which is indeed somewhat frustrating. The lack of stylus in the manufacturer’s offer (even though it could change before the real launch) also didn’t make sense from potential buyers, who feel like such a big device will have comfort issues.
Enthusiastic consumers, though, gave the argument that people don’t use smartphones to call anymore. Bigger screens allow watching movies, enjoying the web experience a bit more as well as editing pictures. With the Mega, why would you get a tablet if your phone can do everything?
0.7 inch less than the smaller tablets
With its gigantic size, it’s still nebulous whether the Samsumg Galaxy Mega will try to position itself as a smartphone or a hybrid product, a “smart-blet”. The difference with some tablets such as the Nexus 7 (7 inches display) is so small that it becomes very hard to draw an official boundary between these two types of products. Eventually, it will become necessary to create a new line of products to include mammoth smartphones.
The struggle of Samsung against Apple
This new launch comes as Samsung is having a hard time fighting the worldwide popularity of the iPhones. A recent article posted on Marketingland indicated that Apple’s smartphone market shares increased from 35% to 38.9% between November and February, while Samsung’S shares went from 20.3% to 21.3%. It is still a small victory for the Korean manufacturer, but Apple is clearly gaining the most from HTC’s and Motorola’s demise.
