Each and every day, domain names are expiring by the thousands. The reason? Either their owners forgot to renew them or have decided to let the domain expire on a business or personal basis. An expired domain spells good news for those who are looking to take advantage of its existing traffic, backlinks, and directory listings. These people would grab the opportunity and buy these dropped domain names.

They understand that these dropped domain names may still be yielding a generous amount of traffic that can be redirected to other websites. Also, a great deal of website owners with niche sites knows that a large number of these expired domain names contain widely promoted websites that may enable them to instantly use their traffic for a cheap price.

To capitalize on early commission earnings on a particular product, associate marketers would build landing pages to promote that product, and one of the most effective ways to do that is to inject traffic to that site by using an expired domain. Although the redirected traffic might generate some visitors whose interests are totally unrelated to the product or service, it is believed that a small percentage of these visitors might possibly end up buying the product or availing of the service. Simply put, dropped domain names are just free traffic sources that can generate income for an online business.

With the occurrence of expired domains come new undertakings. Websites were created to specifically give out information that would help interested buyers to obtain expired domain names. An example of this kind of website is dropping.com. It supplies dropped domain information to domain buyers and SEO experts at a basic plan rate of $49.95 a month. It is the growing value of expired domain names that gave birth to this online business. If you are interested to invest in the kind of business opportunities and ideas these dropped domains may offer in your pursuit of online success, it is vastly recommended that you explore and learn from these kinds of websites.

Passive income could be generated by allowing ads to be placed on dropped domain names with traffic. For example, Adsense or any ad service of your choice can run on expired domains. Also, to place ads on the domain, you can basically use the domain parking space. If you do this, you will need to pay full attention to the number of backlinks it has and the ratings on the domain name located at the top search engines.

Going Big With Expired Domains

Building a website using a dropped domain may seem overwhelming, but in fact, it can be very rewarding. It is like building a house on a previously built foundation when you have a domain name that has already built up its search engine rank and is still getting traffic. You just have to continue building on what has already been pre-established. You will have your work cut out for you when you labor around the domain name and its current related visitor traffic.

For a newbie who is interested in this idea of utilizing and developing expired domains, you must aptly find a hosting service and diligently learn about creating a website. It may sound scary and costly, but in actuality, it’s not. Easy website-building applications like WordPress and many cheap websites hosting services will help you build your website online.

You can tap into revenue sources generated from a website that already has incoming traffic and use that to your advantage. It would be easy for you to sell links to other website owners or sell ad space to those in your related niche.

For those who are new to the domain name business, a rule of thumb is to be extremely careful with your valuable domains. Be sure to check the age of an expired domain because not all of them are worth the time and money. Old domains are much more worth your effort. Look for domain names that have well-built incoming links and are generating search engine traffic. Search through expired domain name services for they generally offer all the information you need on that domain name. That would be a good place to start if you are interested in this kind of online business.

In my opinion it all depends, whether one buys an authority domain or a bad domain. It is the wayyou use it.

I think the biggest key is to retain the back links for the domain. I have found the back links usually disappear after a while. I would say staying in the same niche you would have better luck.

Really interesting, I haven’t known that expired domains are sold or have brought back this way. But after I have thought about it, it must be a huge business as well, and I honestly feel sceptic about if they were shared publicly (I mean the significant ones). Btw it would be really nice to catch an expired domain with a high PR and generate some extra-traffic to my blog:) actually it’s not my business I only have a tumblr blog for my personal 3D printed designs, and I don’t need thousands of visitors, the topic is much more alternative.

I say it’s a 2 way street. You need to know everything about the old domain before buying it. You need to do a background check on the business used it before. What they have done. The most important thing is to check PR, backlinks and social shares. If your business or purpose does not go according to the niche, do not buy it!

registering an expired domain can be a good move because one can get the inbound link built earlier so, he has to do less work in getting the PR for that domain name..

    nice article Brandon,
its a very complicated issue to register the expired the domain, According to me it can be the possibility that Google made some penalty on the blog and therefore the owner didn’t renewed the domain again.., so, in my opinion we should check the issues with the domain and mostly try to register a fresh domain name..:)

If there was a specific issue with the site, you can sort that out with Google. meanwhile, free traffic and/or social juice could be coming your way.

Hard to believe that a non-penalised domain with significant backlinks and/or traffic would be left to expire.

I found one coming from a lapsed account on YouTube. No strings attached. I came across it totally by accident from YouTube itself.

I think one key thing to check out is making sure the page rank is valid and backlinks can be retained. If you can find one of these diamonds in the rough you are in business.

In my opinion, it’s a good move. There are several different ways you can profit off of registering expired domains. Whether you want to flip the domains for a profit or use the name for development, you can’t go wrong with either one.
