How Painting Can Increase Productivity at Your Workplace

A well-thought colour combination at workplace boosts the productivity of employee – and it’s proven by science.

Have you ever wondered why you feel fatigued with a strong reluctance of working at the very first hour of your work at times?

Even when you don’t have to meet a deadline or finish a pile of projects at your desk? And the other times, it’s the small things that help you refocus; like the soothing whiteness of the balcony nearby, or the colours of the cafeteria where you have lunch with colleagues every day.

It’s not just the workload that limits your will power. Oddly enough, your state of mind has a lot to do with your ambiance, more than you realise. It’s as subtle as the colours of your wall! Colour is a very stimulating communication tool and light energy that is translated by your retina’s cone photoreceptors and from there by the visual cortex. With the help of the visual cortex, colours alter your perceptions and senses.

It’s All about the Tints and Hues That Makes a Difference

Our fundamental understanding of the correlations between colours and light begins with Sir Isaac Newton.

In 1666, English scientist Sir Isaac Newton discovered seven spectra of light, by putting light through a prism. Each colour had very distinctive properties like- frequency and wavelength of its own. Violet had the highest frequency with lower wavelength; on the contrary, red had the lowest frequency with a higher wavelength. This discovery determined-

  • Primary colours: red, yellow and blue
  • Secondary colours: violet, orange, green
  • Tertiary colours: yellow-orange, red-orange, red-purple, blue-purple, blue-green and yellow-green

This phenomenon has the biggest influence in the colour wheel or Munsell’s hue circle developed in the 1800s. The modern concept of accent colours (warm colours and cool colours) have been developed from this hue circle!

General Understanding of Warm and Cool Colours

Originated from the hue circle, the distinguishing features of warm and cool colours are very general, again the visual perception of colours translated by your visual cortex. Among the spectrum of colours, like yellow, orange was considered as warmer colours. Why? Visually, colours with high wavelengths create heat or warmth and bright like sunlight. In terms of painting, this colour range becomes the symbolism of energy, optimism and enthusiasm.

On the hue circle, cool colours are opposite the hot colours. These colours are usually typified by blue, green, violate. Ocean, sky, trees visually soothe our eyes and invoke the sense of tranquility.

Colours and Brains Functionality

The perception of colours can be subjective, and it has direct correlations to our brains to create this visual perception varied from one to another. Two parts of our brains- left and right hemispheres are responsible for two different departments of thinking. Left hemisphere or left-brain scholastic subjects focus on rational thinking and analytical reasoning. Right hemisphere or right-brain scholastic subjects are solemnly based on intuition, creativity, concealed emotions, symbolism and subjectivity. Both hemispheres of the brains contain a visual cortex, but the comprehension of different colours inevitably vary.

But how can the effects of colours be pre-determined? Colours and it is the primary aspect of colour psychology, which is a new area of human cognitive study. As it already relies on our subjectivity, scientists and psychological researchers experimented the different wavelengths of light in a different frequency that have different reactions to our brains- which can be instinctive at times. Culture, domains, gender etc. also help to mend our perceptions.

The impacts of colours in human nature were interpreted by the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the 19th century. In 1810, he theorised a refutation of Isaac Newton’s discovery about the colour spectrum. He explored the psychological impacts of different colours from his poetic reception and perception instead of scientific. Despite the two perspectives, there was a universal coherence between the two explorations.

How are Colours Associated with Our Work Efficiency?

As a visual language, colours play an integral role in terms of all the non-verbal settings- the interior of our workplace, for instance. Right colour choices that reach employees on the subconscious level deliver just as strong of a message, a distinctive identity on its own. For example, if your workplace is painted with the colours of the company logo, you will subconsciously feel united, or consider yourself a part of the company! Apart from these general ideas, different colour shades can also have effects on work-efficiency. Warmer colours invoke optimism, enthusiasm and energy. And cooler colours infuses a sense of peace and tranquility.

However, some colours are associated with detrimental productivity that can create a synthetic sense of stress, tension. Conventional colours like beige or grey can have a sense of shabbiness and distress. A recent study from the University of Texas found that bland, under stimulating shades of colours in office setting induce a feeling of dullness, distraction and gloominess among the employees.

How to Pick the Right Colours to Paint at the Workplace?

Good understanding of colour psychology is important when it comes to painting your workplace. But the good understanding of how your workplace functions are also not negligible.

  • Is your company has a deadline-driven environments? Are your employees mostly scheduled with a pile of work and longer? Go for cooler colours, especially blue and green. Your employees need to feel relaxed and calm. Cooler colours like blue and accent tints of blue help the employees to deal with work-exhaustion better.
  • Some companies require a lot of brainwork and engagement with different people. Warm colours like yellow, orange boost creativity, co-operation and optimism among the employees. They feel energised and focused.

Employees spend a significant amount of time at work every day. It’s very important to have a work-friendly ambiance that boosts work efficiency even more.
