5 Tips to Maintaining Your Home

According to most people, you can’t maintain a home without remodeling the bathroom or the kitchen. This is far from the truth. As a matter of fact, home maintenance I not complicated like we are made to believe. You can actually maintain your home by simply mowing the lawn or by cutting an overgrown tree that’s too close to the house. This means that every little thing matters as long as it helps in maintain the appeal of your home, especially when you intend to sell it in the near future. A home that’s well maintained can fetch a good price in the property market. Here is a list of the things you can do to ensure your home doesn’t lose its glory.

1. Replace Ventilation Filters

Ventilation filters help in ensuring that you breathe air that’s free from disease-causing organisms such as bacteria. It also prevents parasites such as fleas and mites from crawling into your home through the ventilation openings. And that’s not all. It protects you from breathing air that has been intoxicated by smoke from vehicles, mold and dust. On the other hand, a ventilation filter is not one of those things that you install once and for all. This is because it gets full after some weeks or months. If the filter is full, you might start getting allergic reactions, especially if you have asthma. Experts advise that we have a 14x30x1 filter on standby mode.

2. Solve Electrical and Plumbing Problems

Electrical and plumbing faults can make a home to inhabitable. Electrical faults can be very hazardous because they can trigger fires. Similarly, plumbing issues can cause household items to be damaged by water. It’s therefore advisable you carry out a routine inspection on electrical ducts including circuit breakers to ensure that there are no faults. In case there is a problem, you should call in an experienced electrical technician. Leaking pipes and blocked drainages should be attended to by a plumber.

3. Clean the Carpet, Curtains and Other Rugs

The carpet usually handles all the traffic that flows into a home. All the dust and particles of debris get trapped in the carpet. Besides that, when the floor is cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, some of the dirt rises and ends up being trapped by the curtains and other rugs in the house. Such dirt can trigger allergies if you live with pets that shed a lot of fur. Since vacuuming the carpet and the rest of the floor doesn’t remove all the dirt, it’s advisable you schedule for a thorough cleaning. Even if you are busy at work, you can hire a carpet cleaning company to do the job.

4. Repair Any Damaged Doors and Windows

Damaged doors and windows make it easy for intruders to access your house without experiencing any difficulty. Moreover, they make your home to look older than its age. In fact, heating such a home can be a very costly affair. This is due to the fact that hot air escapes from the rooms through the windows and doors that have gaps that have not yet been sealed, which in return results in a high utility bill.

5. Repair Leaking Roof and Worn Out Walls

A leaking roof can cause your home to be flooded by rainwater. In addition to that, it reduces the value of your property in the market. If you can’t repair or replace the damaged shingles on your own, you should consider hiring a roofing contractor while it’s still early. If the interior walls have peeled off paint, it’s high time you applied a fresh coat of paint. Keep in mind that worn out paint encourages the accumulation of mold. Painting is a simple job because you only need a few brushes and a gallon of paint.
