What Sort of Post-Monsoon Care Does Your Air Conditioners Need in Florida?

As far as Florida is concerned, the overall weather may be hot and humid, but when it rains, it pours. Especially during the rainy season, rarely a day goes by without some light showers at least. However, that doesn’t mean homeowners get any respite from the heat. On the contrary, the overall temperature continues to vary between the 70s and the 80s, and they still need air conditioning to feel cool and comfortable indoors. Unfortunately, most people fail to realize that operating ACs during the monsoon increases the normal wear-and-tear on the system. So, the residents of Miami, New Port Richey, and other parts of Florida should call for AC repair and maintenance immediately after the monsoon gets over.

Here are a few areas to consider when you run a post-monsoon AC checkup.

Filthy AC Condenser Coils

Every year in July and August, thick Saharan dust travels nearly 5,000 miles from Africa to Florida. The dust spreads like crazy – more so in South Florida – and the AC condenser being located outside takes the brunt of the storm. No wonder you find a thick layer of dust covering the condenser unit by the end of the season. The funny part is, most modern air conditioners are designed to resist the elements but dirt and dust still find a way inside your system, making it work twice as hard.

The condenser is responsible for releasing the heat gathered by the AC refrigerant from indoor air. However, if a thick layer of dirt coats the condenser coil, the heat is unable to escape properly.  As a result, the system has to run longer than required, thereby increasing your utility bills at the end of the month. Apart from that, your comfort level is compromised as well since the extra heat your condenser fails to channel outside, heads right back into your house. Your contractor needs to remove sticks, leaves, and other large debris from the AC condenser coils for the unit to work efficiently again.

Blocked Air Filters

The monsoon season in Florida is damp and dusty, which means dirt particles cling to the air filters in your AC. With extended usage, these components become clogged, blocking smooth airflow. Not only does your room take a longer time to cool down, but there is a considerable dip in the amount of clean, filtered air emitted by the system as well. What’s more, the dust and allergens take a toll on the health of you and your loved ones. Imagine trying to breathe through a thick blanket, and you’ll get an idea about just how uncomfortable the situation is.

That’s why you need to get your air filters replaced as soon as the monsoon season is over. In fact, it’s recommended that you call an AC technician to change the air filter every two weeks during the rainy season to avoid clogging problems.

Obstructed Airways

Often homeowners think it unnecessary to remove any foliage near the condenser unit before the monsoon season arrives. The outcome of skipping this simple step, however, might be severe. Sometimes, despite homeowners’ precautions,   branches or twigs may snap off the trees and fly into your AC condenser, blocking it. In that case, hire a professional to remove the blockage.  If the airway remains blocked by shrubs and trees, the pressure on your condenser will increase. Cutting back the vegetation,  on the other hand, will help create a pathway for the warm air to escape outside.

Floridians should locate a good AC repair service in New Port Richey, Tampa, or thereabouts, and put them on speed dial. The storm and the rain may affect your AC system in several ways, and, professional assistance will help your AC get back to normal afterwards.
