How Common Are Rear-End Collisions?

Wondering just how common rear-end collisions are these days?  Look no further than the ultimate record-keeping source, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). According to the NTSB, there are about 1.7 million rear-end collisions in the United States each year alone.  The statistics turn grim, as about 1,700 people involved in these collisions die while around 500,000 are physically hurt.

Another unfortunate layer is that the NTSB estimated that nearly 80% of these deaths and injuries could be easily prevented by in-car avoidance systems, by wearing a seatbelt, and by simply paying more attention to the roadway and surrounding traffic.

Not all cars are equipped with the latest tech that can drastically improve the risk of collisions.  According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, vehicles with front-crash prevention systems can aid in the reduction of front-into-rear crash scenarios, a daisy chain effect that happens when multiple cars are in such close proximity to one another, that the inertia of the first car causes multiple collisions.

If you find yourself to be in the midst of a rear-end collision, in some cases, your insurance will not cover the damage dealt by the driver at fault.  While this is frustrating and unfair for those in the middle of a multi-car rear-end collision situation, it makes a good case for new car models with safety systems installed, like automatic brake locks, alerts, and auto-swerving to avoid impacts on the roadway.

The NTSB also reports that about 87% of drivers who cause rear-end collisions were not paying attention to the road.  Distractions to blame for these collisions are smartphones and other practices not related to driving.  Rear-end collisions are one of the most common traffic accidents that occur on roadways.  Another reasoning indicates the lack of attention paid at traffic lights and stop signs.  Most rear-end collisions occur between stopped or slow moving vehicles.

Technology is a double-edged sword in scenarios such as rear-end collisions.  Smartphones and other gadgets are distracting and can cause collisions, but the latest car systems are technologically advanced enough to brake at the sign of impact or alert the driver when needed.

Understanding the statistics could be what you need to put down the phone and decide to send the text later (it can wait), or maybe start car shopping for a car that has implemented these systems that could one day save your or someone else’s life.  By paying more attention to the ongoing traffic, you won’t have to pay thousands of dollars in repairs on your car or anyone else’s involvement in the collision.
