How to Create the Best Eulogy

Creating a eulogy can be a difficult task. It is extremely emotional dealing with the loss of a loved one. You will have to deal with all the stages of grief associated with their death coupled with the stresses of everyday life. So, how can you find the time and the strength to properly honor and memorialize the life of your loved one during this most difficult time? It will not be easy, but here are a few tips that may help you through this trying time:

1. Begin as soon as possible. Death can be sudden, and some of us may not be prepared for the possibility. However, if you are a friend or family member of someone who is older or who happens to be in bad health, it does not hurt to be prepared to write something down prior to their death. For some of us, this may be a little too morbid, but if you are comfortable with it and want to be prepared, then it is perfectly fine to start early. If you do not want to do this or do not have the chance, you need to be prepared to write down something as soon as possible.

2. Ask friends and family for help. Get in touch with those closest to the deceased and ask them to share their favorite memories and stories of your loved one. You will want to take notes so that you do not forget something important. They may have details about your loved one’s life that you are unaware of and cannot wait to share with others. Their stories may even help you process and get through some of your grief. Remember you can use these notes not only to help you write the best eulogy but to remember some of the best times involving your loved one.

3. Keep a notepad. You will want to write down everything you can about your loved one, which means you will want to keep this notepad near you at all times because you never know when something memorable will strike you. You will want to keep the stories friends and family shared and any thoughts or ideas you may come up with about your loved one. Everything you will want to include in the eulogy should be written down to ensure you do not forget to include something important in the eulogy.

4. Personalize it and make it positive. You want the eulogy to reflect who the person was . Do not focus on things such as their job but on things they enjoyed. Their achievements and accomplishments can be stated but remember to include fond memories and stories about the deceased. Remember funerals can have a negative connotation for many involved, so please try to stay away from anything negative. Rely on statements and stories that showed how much your loved one cherished and enjoyed their life. You do not have to mention any of the bad times they may or may not have gone through.

5. Practice. Remember practice makes perfect. A eulogy can be an extremely emotional speech for most. You will need to take some time and run through your eulogy to ensure  that you can easily and safely say the things you want. You may become emotional during these practice speeches. Remember this is perfectly normal. The more you practice the easier it will become to get through the entire speech on the day of the funeral.

It can be a very stressful and emotional time dealing with the death of a loved one. When you couple the grief of losing someone with the task of having to write their eulogy, it can seem near impossible. It is difficult having to drown in all that emotion but also wanting so badly to properly memorialize the person you loved. It may seem close to impossible to successfully accomplish this daunting task. However, by following some of the tips above, hopefully, you will find yourself creating the best eulogy for your loved one.
