5 Tips for Finding a Good Periodontist in your Area

A periodontist is a medical practitioner that is focused on periodontal issues such as gum disease. Periodontists also handle cosmetic issues such as oral plastic surgery, maintenance, and preventative care. In short, they are the kind of specialist’s you would need both for medical and beauty reasons. So how do you find a good one, one that won’t mess up your dental? To help you find a suitable one, here are 5 tips for finding a good periodontist in your area.

1. Look at their certifications

There are certain qualifications that all periodontists should have, for them to practice. As a rule, go for a periodontist that has all the necessary certifications required for this practice. Lack of these certifications is a red flag and could mean that they are either quacks, or they are still students that are yet to gain the necessary experience to do the work satisfactorily.

2. Ask your dentist for tips

Most medical practitioners have contacts within the profession. Therefore, your local dentist might be a good start in finding a good periodontist.  Just ask them for some honest recommendations about the best periodontists in your area, and you will be surprised that they have some valuable contacts in this field. Besides, they can give you an honest opinion, from a medical perspective, on whether you really need a periodontist or not.  Sometimes we think that we need a specialist, when in reality the problem can be solved by a general practitioner, or in this case, a dentist.

3. Research on the treatment methods of different periodontists

A simple google search of periodontists in your locality will give you a list of them. But that’s just the first step and does little in helping you determine whether they are good for you or not. The next step is to research their treatment methods, mainly surgery v non-surgical treatments. The best periodontists are those that prefer non-surgical treatment until there is a real need for surgery. Surgery is always risky, and a periodontist that is quick to go for surgery might not be the best one for you.

5. Research on their pricing

Periodontists don’t come cheap, and the cost of one, especially if the process involves surgery can run up your insurance costs. That’s why it is best to go for a periodontist whose treatment costs are within your reach. However, cost shouldn’t be the only factor in choosing a periodontist, especially when your treatment involves surgery. It is best to go for the best even if they may be pricier, but for minor issues, just go for the cheaper ones.

5. Find out the equipment they use

The equipment that a periodontist uses can have a huge impact on the quality of their service. That’s why the best periodontists are those that use the latest, hi-tech equipment in handling their patient’s needs. This is information that you can easily get online, or from your friends who have dealt with specific periodontists in the past. However, this should only be an issue if you are going for surgery.
