5 Things to Avoid When Moving to a New Home

Living in one place for many years doesn’t give you a chance to grow. You get accustomed to the same routine and seeing the same people all the time, if not daily. However, moving to a new home can connect and familiarize you more with your inner self.

Moving to a new home, especially a different city, enables you to experience new cultures from what you are used to. Meeting new people is rewarding as you experience what the world has to offer and its uniqueness. Moving is a way of breaking out of your comfort zone.

Everyone faces one or more challenges when moving. However, it is the challenges that make life exciting; you get to enjoy the freedom that comes with being independent while finding out lots of interesting things about yourself. Adjusting to your new life in your new home can be easy if you can avoid the following things when moving:

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Moving

1. Failing to Prepare Your New Home in Time

Your new home should be in a perfect condition before you move in. Failing to get it ready before moving in can make settling difficult. Inspect your new home to ensure that electrical and plumbing systems are functioning before you actually move in. Inspect the house for pest infestations, mold growth and any structural damage.

Take the necessary measures to solve any problems identified before moving in. Arrange for repairs and renovations for the house before you actually move. If you move before renovation is complete, you will either take your belongings to a storage unit or squeeze them in a room that’s complete.

The process of moving is already cumbersome. You wouldn’t want to stay in a hotel waiting for the renovation work to be complete. Moreover, getting storage is another expense you might not be able to afford.

2. Forgetting to Inspect Delivery Boxes

Once you reach your home, you may be so excited that you forget to check the delivery boxes. Create an inventory list before leaving your old home and keep it with you to confirm that the boxes are sealed and in perfect condition.

Examine the larger items for damage and report any problems immediately to the moving company. With such issues, if you don’t report immediately, you may have a problem convincing the moving company for compensation.

3. Forgetting to Transfer Utilities

Forgetting to transfer utilities from the municipality may make the day you want to move the worst. You might sleep in the dark, be unable to clean the mess from unpacking and even fail to shower after a long day. Electricity, water and gas are essential in any household and you cannot afford to lack them even for a few hours, let alone a day.

4. Unpacking the Wrong Way

Avoid doing things in a rush when unpacking. It may result in wasted time or even injuries and accidents. Moreover, avoid procrastination. Even though you may be exhausted after moving, avoid procrastination when it comes to unpacking your stuff. Unpack your belongings one at a time and before you know it, you’ll be done.

5. Setting Up Appliances on Your Own

Assembling furniture and setting up appliances yourself, especially if you don’t have the right tools could ruin delicate materials or parts. Call a professional or an experienced friend with the right know-how on how to assemble appliances.

Excellent tip. Another one I like is to pack all your essential items in an oddly shaped, differently colored box. When you arrive at your new location, this box should be extremely easy to locate. Thanks for sharing!
