The 5 Common Mistakes People Make When Choosing Cloud Service

Cloud computing is the next big thing when it comes to saving data on a secure server. Due to the unavailability of scalable resources or efficient IT tools that are difficult to access, choosing the right kind of cloud service has become a task. Companies often make hasty decisions and end up settling for cheap services or not the right one for the data type.

Select the right type of cloud – The selection for the right kind of cloud is very integral to the kind of business. This selection should be based on your enterprise’s present and future objectives and needs. The criteria for adjudging the right cloud service provider should be not just cost or performance, but also data security, software compatibility, industry compliance etc. It also depends mainly on what type of data and software you use and whom it caters to. An enterprise with financial data should be more selective in choosing their cloud type and a company that

Not checking for performance credibility – As mentioned before, cloud computing providers are not identical. And that means they also have differing levels of performance and capacity for clients. Some may offer robust features, like access to unlimited previous file version histories to retrieve past file versions, limitless storage space, and military grade encryption, while others may fall short. Be aware of your business’s needs and expectations of a cloud provider so you can pick the one that will perform all of the functions you need

Assuming any operating system will work – If your company relies on a Windows OS, Linux, or OSX environment to operate, make sure you’ve selected a cloud provider that works with them. While OS compatibility is easy to confirm, many companies don’t ask until they are in the thick of a migration. While technology and compatibilities are advancing and becoming more robust every day, many cloud computing providers still service a narrower market. Never assume, and always verify OS compatibility first.

Confining cloud strategy to a single vendor – A good cloud needs to be vendor-agnostic, and a carefully thought out process. Do not get set on your choice of cloud provider before surveying the choices or analyzing the service provider’s profile. Is your cloud strategy involving a single vendor or do you need multiple vendors? Sometimes a single cloud service provider might satisfy all your cloud business needs. Using multiple vendors could potentially become an orchestration and management nightmare.

Not ensuring data security – This is undoubtedly the most important question you need to ask and know from your CSP. This is because, first, you need to know whether your data is secure, and second, whether it is stored in a permissible location as per your country laws. Certain enterprises, like law firms, have serious issues on data security as they have to safeguard client privacy. Also, some countries, e.g., European countries, have strict laws regarding the geographical location where they store data. It is most often best to check on data security independently and periodically. Relying on the CSP alone for data security requires customizes data security policies and not every provider would be ready to do that.
