A typical laptop’s WiFi is stronger than that of a mobile device. However, if you are not getting decent signal and speed on your laptop, it might be possible that the network is really very weak for efficient use.
If you are in the best place and still not getting optimal results, then follow these tricks. Who knows? You might just be in luck!
1. Upgrade the Router
Most modern-day laptops use 802.11n or 802.11g for efficient WiFi utilization.
If your router’s an old-school 802.11b device, go for an upgrade so that it can match the speed of your laptop.
2. Use WiFi Repeaters
If you want to add more strength to your WiFi signal, use a repeater (AKA range expander or wireless amplifier).
WiFi repeater picks up WiFi signals from the router and retransmits it. You should place your repeater somewhere around the edge of your existing signal for maximum utilization. It’ll then be able to rebroadcast the signal, covering remote areas of your location as per your need.
3. Install an external WiFi adapter
Now, I am not saying that laptop adapters are bad. They are good but external adapters are great.
If your laptop’s too old, consider disabling the built-in adapter and install an external adapter to brighten things up.
External WiFi adapters typically come with large antenna using up-to-date technologies that can drastically improve the WiFi connection at a moment’s notice.
4. Get an omnidirectional router antenna to replace the standard one
The advantage of an omnidirectional antenna is that it’s capable of providing signals in all directions. This allows you to specifically target the utilization zone of your choice.
5. Change the wireless channel
WiFi router broadcast signals on several channels. If your current channel is facing a lot of interferences, the connection may hog down significantly.
Change the wireless channel or the access point’s settings as a part of your trial and error fixes.
6. Adjust the transmission power
Most network adapters support their connection by means of transmission power adjustments.
This setting can be manually adjusted through the adapter’s drive program or interface. Always put the transmission power to maximum so you can get the strongest possible signal at any point in time.
Having said that, if your laptop’s in a power-saving mode, it’ll automatically shift the settings back to the default optimal value.
7. Reposition the router
Try to place the router in a more centralized position if possible. Go for a place where thick walls or furniture cannot congest your signal.
And also avoid placing your APs or routers near metal surfaces and electronic gadgets (including the likes of remote controllers, microwave ovens, etc.) because they can interfere with your signal.
8. Lastly, disable bandwidth-hogging applications
Use the task manager for checking the bandwidth-hogging applications in the background.
Disable unused applications so your network speed and device performance, both can improve.
