5 Things You Can Do to Improve the Security of your Devices

Hacking is pretty common these days. In fact, many people were affected due to hacking attacks last year that caused a loss of over 5 billion dollars by ransomware alone. These include not just individuals but businesses as well since hacking incidents seem to be common everywhere with hackers using better and more reliable techniques to get into a system.

With growing incidents the need to safeguard your devices is also on the rise. A system that is not protected is most vulnerable to an attack, which is why you need to up your game and provide your devices with the security that they need.

Here are 5 things you can do to improve the security of your devices.

1. Research Before You Give Any Information Online

You have to research about the various internal and external vulnerabilities hackers exploit. Find out how they gain access to your system, learn about different ways of hacking such as phishing and protect yourself against such threats.

Surf the internet smartly and never give out your information on a website that appears to be fishy. Always trust your instincts. Moreover, you can check how good or trustworthy a website is just by running a Google search.

If a website has bad reviews then it is most probably a scam and you should stay away from it. Other than this, make sure to be careful when you access sensitive sites through the internet, such as when you log into your online banking account.

Avoid doing so through a public WiFi network as it is less secure than a private network. Moreover, use on-screen keyboards where possible to avoid your keys being logged, which is a common way of hacking into a system these days.

Make sure you change your WiFi passwords on a weekly basis as well to prevent hackers from gaining access to your WiFi.

2. Download A Powerful Antivirus

Get your hands on an antivirus that provides you with protection against all kinds of threats. It is important to know that viruses are not all that you need to worry about. These are malware and spyware that are equally dangerous.

Make sure to use an antivirus that guards you against all such threats and one that works on all your devices as well, such as laptops and tablets.

3. Update All Your Systems

Make sure to keep your operating system and all software, especially your antivirus program, updated at all hours. A good option is to turn on automatic update function so that your operating system updates as soon as an update is available.

4. Be Careful When Downloading Files

Always make sure to only download files from trusted sources. Do not trust a file unless you are sure and avoid running apps from untrusted sources. Your system will usually warn you when you try to download or install a third-party software that is not trusted so make sure to pay attention to such warnings.

Other than this, be careful about the links you click as some links are not real and will only direct you to sites that can harm your computer. This is an easy way to hack into a system and the only way to be safe is to scan links before you click on ‘em.

5. Use Hard to Guess Passwords

Use passwords on everything, computers, phones, software, and even individual files with sensitive information.

Other than this, make sure to keep passwords that are hard to guess. A good idea is to keep long passwords that include a mix of numbers, symbols and words.

Moreover, use two step verification wherever possible and change your password every few months as well.

Make sure to follow these simple tips so that your devices are well protected. Other than this, you can also backup your data by turning to a good server backup appliance.

These are very simple tips but really important when surfing the internet. There are lots of phishing sites out there that are able to gather information from your computer by just clicking the link a person sent you. Luckily, Google is smart enough to warn you about these types of websites but Google doesn’t detect everything.
