New Innovative Approaches to Implement in a Classroom

Classrooms should be beacons of learning and acceptance! In the modern climate, we can’t afford for younger people to sit back and not partake in exercises that will improve their knowledge of the world around them. But, this is all well and good, but a lot of the time, teachers present lessons that are mundane and pointless.

This causes kids to switch off and to not pay attention at all. Every lesson like this is a wasted opportunity to inspire a student to educate themselves and really strive to make a difference in the world. But, this shouldn’t be a daunting task. There is a whole load of ways in which you can perform innovative and thought-provoking lessons that really engage students. Here are a few tips and pieces of advice for innovative methods in the classroom that can help turn it from a drab old room to a fantastic place of learning!

Go outside

It may sound like the oldest trick in the teacher book, but it can really do wonders for your class if used in the correct situation. It all depends on what the class is actually studying, say for instance you are going through poetry with them. The best place to appreciate poetry is definitely not an enclosed, artificially-lit room. Take your students out onto the grass and let them study it out there! Being in and around nature will help your students to really envision what the poet envisioned, especially if the poem is about nature or something similar. Whatever the topic you are tackling is, students can get a real jump start from going outside and getting some fresh air.

Debate

Don’t forget about the importance of debating skills. Instead of sitting in their seats and dragging themselves through the events of a battle in History or the welfare of a country in Geography, tell your students to get out of their seats! Then tell them to move to one side of the class or another, dependent on what side they support in the battle, or whether they think the country in question needs support. Once they go to which side they support, ask them to form groups and come up with 3 reasons why they chose that side. Once they are finished doing this, then let the debate begin! You’ll find that your students are much more excited to voice their opinions and argue their side in this situation. And they might find that maybe they were incorrect to stand on the side they did. Nobody has to voice their opinions or talk if they don’t want to, but everyone should contribute at some point!

Study tips

Spend a session with your class where you detail to them an array of tips for revising! You can treat it like you are giving them super secret information that they shouldn’t be allowed to hear. Tell them about sites where they can say to someone ‘write my research paper’ like papersowl.com and they get to work. You can tell them a bit about the marking scheme that they will be judged against and let them know exactly what they need to do in order to get high marks. Treat it like a fun session where you are giving them information that is really going to help them in those tough revision weeks. They’ll get very excited if you treat it like top secret information and will definitely pay attention to what you have to say.

Lessons do not need to be boring, mundane or dull. Take the opportunity to turn the hour-long session into something that the students will talk to their classmates about, or something that they’ll remember all the way through their schooling. That way you can say that you’ve made a difference as a teacher. Go outside and get your students some fresh air and let them clear their heads before trying to struggle through a poem. Turn your classroom into a debating room where each side tries to win your agreement. Or turn your classroom into a top-secret briefing room where you let the kids know how to get the best marks they can in super secret ways.

All three of these ideas will really demand the attention of your students, and they are all beneficial in totally different ways! Don’t waste another lesson sitting around and writing on the board, do something fun with your students, something they will remember!
