5 Tips to Keeping your Home Dust and Allergen Free

Keeping your home free from dust and allergens is probably one of the greatest challenges in housekeeping. It entails cleaning regularly and making sure that every area of the house is neat and tidy. And for good reason. A clean home is a livable home, one that you can always look forward to at the end of the day.

And of course, a clean home has a ton of health benefits. Germs and bacteria can’t spread easily. Allergy and asthma symptoms are avoided because you keep every corner of your home spot free. If you’re looking for tips on keeping your home dust and allergen free, you’ve come to the right place. From getting the best dust collectors and choosing the right air filters, here’s a guide that will help you keep your home safe and healthy!

1. Declutter your home

Generally, the less things you have in your house, the less chances you have in inviting allergens in. Allergies come from a variety of things. It could be from pollen, pet dander, or dust. By clearing your room of unimportant things such as old newspapers, rags, and clothes, you give these allergens fewer places to sit in. If there’s one area you should focus on, it should be the bedroom because you spend most of your time in there. Change your sheets every week and make sure to dust every surface and corner in your room.

2. Make sure the air is clean

Make sure that your vents and air conditioning system are clean, as they’re your first line of defense in making your home totally inhospitable to allergens. Keep the gaps on your vents clear or any obstruction such as hanging dust and spiderwebs. A well-ventilated house prevents mold spores from growing on surfaces. Control the humidity in your home to prevent moisture, dust, and pollen from settling in. A good level to maintain would be 50%.

3. Use air purifiers

Air purifiers are helpful products to use in keeping the dust levels at your home low. If someone in your family is suffering from allergies, it may be wise to get an air purifier with HEPA (high-efficiency particulate air) filter. It’s effective in keeping the air in your house clean as it effectively traps harmful particles in the air such as dust, pollen, pet dander and even smoke.

4. Avoid items that are prone to dust

What items are we talking about specifically? Part of decluttering your home is ensuring dust magnets are kept to a minimum. This includes carpets, curtains, and upholstered furniture. Believe it or not, these are cozy nests for allergens. It doesn’t mean you have to totally eliminate them from your home, just be extra careful with them so it doesn’t catch a lot of dust. Actually, everything in the house is a dust catcher. Table surfaces, shelf corners, the floor, everything. It all boils down to how thorough you clean your house.

5. Choose the right cleaning supplies

In general, a clean house is an allergen-free house. So make an effort to make cleaning a habit. And of course, make sure you have the right cleaning supplies with you. A vacuum cleaner is helpful in reducing dust on the floor. When it comes to dusting and wiping other surfaces, make sure you use damp or treated cloth because it attracts dust instead. Dusting improperly may lead to scattering and may even worsen the air in your home. When it comes to cleaning products, not all of them are made equal. Consider getting products that are made with natural ingredients that are not harsh on the skin and nose. Some chemicals found in cleaning solutions may trigger those who are suffering from allergies and asthma, so it’s wise to look at your cleaning supplies too.
