5 of the Top Funeral Planning Mistakes to Avoid

There are some of us who like to plan every little event in our lives. Then there are those of us who decide we are just going to let whatever will happen happen. However, even those of us who like to plan every little event seem to skip planning one of the most important events in our lives, our funeral. For some reason we fail to make the necessary details and inform our loved ones of our wishes.

However, pre-planning your funeral ensures that our wishes are followed to a tee and helps us spread out the financial responsibility. There are numerous benefits associated with pre-planning your funeral, but there are also multiple mistakes many of us may make in this area. We need to ensure that we take our time and do all of our research as we plan our funeral and all should be fine. Here is a look at the top five funeral planning mistakes.

1.    Assuming we have all the time in the world to plan our funeral. I know most of us do not like to think about our impending death, and planning a funeral can make us feel vulnerable and as if our time is limited. However, we are vulnerable and our time is limited. Just because you are planning your funeral today does not mean you are going to die tomorrow; however, it will happen one day. And, you should feel better knowing you are leaving your loved ones without as big a burden.

2.    Lacking clear funeral wishes. It can be an an emotional time for your loved ones after you pass. The best thing to do is to have a will an a detailed outline of how you would like your funeral to go. This will help end any unnecessary fighting among your loved ones. All you need to do is decide what you want or definitely do not want and have a written copy somewhere that your friends and family can easily find and will backup what you want without a doubt.

3.    Not asking the proper questions or doing your research. I know that some of us may not feel comfortable asking questions, but you should be completely informed and aware of all your options. You will want to ask questions, research online, look at reviews and listen to word of mouth when it comes to planning your funeral. You want to be as informed as can be. You should understand all the options, processes and the associated costs to make the decisions that fit your needs the best.

4.    Failure to communicate with loved ones. This is one of the biggest mistakes we can make when planning a funeral. We fail to inform our loved ones of our wishes, or we fail to have written documentation of what we want. You need to discuss with your friends and family what you want to happen during your funeral and have written detailed plan. You should have the contact at the funeral home and all of your receipts kept in a place where your family can easily find them. You do not want all of your pre-planning to go to waste simply because you failed to let others know of your wishes and never told them where to find your plans.

5.    Price becoming a deciding factor. Some of us may think that the best thing we can do for our loved ones is to go with the most affordable funeral options. Allowing the budget to be the determining factor could lead you down the wrong path. You should talk with your loved ones and see what they want and honestly ask yourself if price was not a factor what would you want. Remember you can ask funeral homes about payment plans if you are preplanning your funeral. Also, your loved ones may want something for your funeral that they may want to pay for or chip in for. If it is something extremely important to you or them, it is fine to accept their help, and it will make them feel as if they are a part of your planning.

Many funeral homes will help you plan your funeral step by step. Do not be afraid to ask questions and ask for their suggestions. This is what they are there for. Take your time, do your research and think about what you truly want. Do not be afraid to involve your family in the planning and always keep them informed of your decisions and any payments you have made. It can be a long road, but it will most assuredly pay off for you and your loved ones in the end.
