The healthcare industry, also known as health economy provides services to the patients. 

The health-care sector comprises of several fields, some of which are:

  • Medical devices
  • Telemedicine
  • Health insurance
  • Clinical trials
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing

There has been a tremendous increase in healthcare services in the recent past. Hence, this sector offers a great scope of employment. However, having some key skills can make you score above other applicants. Different fields will require a different skill-set. Yet, there are some key qualities that a prospective employer in healthcare sector will look for. Read on to find out more.

What does the healthcare industry expect from candidates?

Following are some of the expectations that this sector has from candidates.

  1. A relevant degree

The first requirement in a healthcare job is a degree in the related field.

Most entry-level positions require a Bachelor’s degree, and Gwynedd Mercy is a top nursing school in Philadelphia where you can pursue your Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Higher level positions might ask for a MBA, depending on the profile. Some positions may specifically ask for a doctoral degree. A good academic background is desirable.

  1. Some prior training

Getting exposure in some internship or training program definitely adds value to your CV. Look for short-term training programs that will hone your academic skills. Such an exposure will give you a detailed idea about the job profile. It will also help you make an informed decision regarding your career.

  1. Knowing the Organization

An ideal candidate is expected to know the organizational set –up. Whatever your role may be, you might come across situations that need prompt action. Knowing the organizational hierarchy and their scopes helps.

  1. Adapting to changing environment

No two days are the same in this field. Hence, the ideal candidate should be deft in handling the dynamics at workplace. Some days may be action-packed while others may come across as monotonous. Ability to handle stress will be an added advantage.

A large amount of data is generated in healthcare sector. The ideal candidate should be able to handle data and analyze it to arrive at a result. Therefore, analytical thinking is a definite plus.

The data and information has to be recorded in a proper manner. This is where computer knowledge and office skills will help. Record keeping, referencing and retrieving data will be regularly needed.

  1. Empathy and compassion

A job in this sector might involve meeting patients and their families. A sense of empathy and compassion will make the candidate more suitable. Human communication is more fruitful and satisfying is there is mutual understanding. Healthcare sector demands these qualities more than any other sector.

  1. Public speaking

These jobs will frequently involve presenting data and findings to a big audience. Also, building your professional network will need you to be able to express your thoughts clearly. As the face of your department, you should be clear regarding your communication.

  1. Multi-tasking

Being able to handle multiple things together and efficiently is a great asset. Often, there are deadlines to meet and the candidate should not buckle under pressure.

  1. Being a team worker

Most of the projects and assignments will require a team of people working together. Hence, it is important that you know how to work in a team. Following a code of conduct and ethics is also important. Know your role in the team and deliver accordingly.

  1. Being multilingual

This is not an absolute requirement. But knowing more than one language can help a lot when you are dealing with big projects. Sometimes, interacting with patients or prospective clients is better in their native language.
