Five Tips to Save You Hours of Cleaning After Renovations

As you anxiously await getting started on your big home renovation plans, it’s very easy to get caught up in the moment. Likely all that’s in your head is the finished project and just how wonderful it will be for your home. While home renovations are great, they are notorious for leaving behind some rather large messes that will have you cleaning for hours. So why not tackle this issue before it happens?

Here are some tips you can use that will end up saving you hours’ worth of cleaning after the renovations are complete.

Protect Your Furniture

Dust and a paint are a major factor when dealing with home renovations. There’s a good chance you’ll be stuck cleaning dust and paint off surfaces for days, if not weeks after the project is complete. If you have fabric furniture, then dust tends to cling to its surface even more so. A great tip is to protect your furniture before the renovations begin with large sheets, drop cloths, or plastic tarps. Just be sure to leave them fully covered until the project finished.

Cut Down on the Amount of Dust in the Home

In order to prevent the dust from reaching other rooms and areas of the home, you can look into dust containment products, which basically section off a space or room with a plastic tarp and re-sealable door. You’ll be able to get in and out of the room with ease, but the dust will stay contained. This is even more important for those who suffer from dust allergies and asthma.

As an extra step, you can close doors to rooms that aren’t under construction. This again will help cut down on the dust.

Do a Daily Clean

Sure, this tip isn’t fun to do, but it will make a huge difference at the end of the project. Be sure to do a daily clean-up at the end of the day. This should include vacuuming and tidying up. By doing this each day, you’ll prevent large build-ups of dust, dirt, and waste.

Open the Windows

Depending on the time of year you are doing your renovation projects, it’s also wise to open the windows and let the house air out. This ensures that debris and dust don’t get trapped in screens and it helps cut down on paint fumes and other odours.

Protect the Floors

The final tip is to protect your floors before the renovations begin. It is a lot easier to throw out protective paper than it is to clean paint out of a carpet or off hardwood flooring. It will save you hours’ worth of work, and possibly from having to replace your flooring.

Enjoy Your Renovations That Much Sooner

By taking these steps before and during the renovation project, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the new space that much faster once the work is complete. You won’t have hours’ worth of cleaning ahead of you since you’ve taken all these preventative measures.

Thank you for the article! This reminded me of how we were cleaning our house after the renovation. The dust really was everywhere. But with time we realized that wet (but not too wet) cloths on the floor or on furniture can help to kind of trap the dust and dirt. We also cleaned after every small repair which helped a lot.
