3 Cloud Concerns and How To Secure Against Them

At a 47% response rate, cloud security is the most important emerging technology in 2017 according to CompuCom.

Consider, though, with higher cloud technology use comes more cause for concern. Here are three of the top cloud security issues and what you can do to guard against them.

1- Large-Scale Public Cloud Breach

Nearly every organization is either using or considering using a public cloud for their new projects. Given the volume of data stored and the security shortcuts that are taken by the businesses who are storing information, a large-scale breach in the public cloud is inevitable.

Solution

Palo Alto Networks suggests risk decreases when “more diligence is applied to the customer piece of the shared security responsibility model. Considerations should include complete visibility and control at the application level and the prevention of known and unknown threats, with an eye toward automation to take what has been learned and use it to continually improve prevention techniques for all customers.”

2- Shifting Data Privacy Laws

The cloud is global and data is flowing across borders without enough consideration given to the diversity among clouds and a consistent security policy.

Solution

IT leaders will need to look for flexibility and adaptability from their cloud security vendors. They will also need to adapt to (and comply with) the resident nation-state as well as with local data residency requirements.

3- Insecure Application Programming Interfaces (APIs)

The mainstay for accessing services within clouds, APIs pose a possible hacking risk because of their insecurity in authentication methods and metadata services.

Solution

Best practices for securing APIs include determining the security of your cloud provider (ask for penetration tests and vulnerability assessments) and verifying that their encryption keys have an access and authentication mechanism that is secure.

When proper measures are taken to guard against these potential problems, there is little need to be concerned about cloud security. For help in this area, utilizing professional cloud architecture and planning will go a long way to keeping your data safe and secure.

One the major reason many businesses are not adopting enterprise mobility services, BYOD, and other similar services is just because of the risk of security. And agreed on the APIs insecurity, during application development phase very few companies give much priority to security.
