Too Many Devices? How to Simplify All of the Technology in Your Home

Many families have a tough time keeping track of different files, operating systems, programs, chargers, and accessories. This post will help you with such issues.

You might have dozens of different devices scattered throughout your home, and that can create an extremely cluttered environment. Many families have a tough time keeping track of different files, operating systems, programs, chargers, and accessories. If this sounds like your own situation, then here is a look at a few tips you can use to organize and downsize your electronics.

Use One Operating System

While many of the leading operating systems are now somewhat compatible with one another, it is still easier to have most of your devices running on a single operating system. Once all of your devices have the same operating system, each person in your family can use a single device such as a smartphone to control your televisions, wireless thermostat, and printer.

Invest in Hybrid Devices

One of the easiest ways to downsize your electronics is to start investing in hybrid devices. Instead of having a desktop for homework and a tablet for streaming media, your children might benefit from using a tablet PC for everything. Tablet PCs are now extremely compact, and they can do almost everything that a larger computer can do without being tethered to the wall. These popular devices can easily replace old radios, televisions, e-readers, tablets, and desktops.

Work on Cable Management

Dealing with piles of cables is one of the most aggravating aspects of modern technology. Not only is it extremely easy to lose those cables, but they often create “phantom loads” that continue to draw a tremendous amount of energy even when they are not actively being used. Using multipurpose cords such as piggyback plugs, like those you can get from Americord, will reduce the amount of clutter in your home and help you avoid tripping your breakers.

Purge Your Devices Once a Year

Electronics can be very expensive, and that is why many people hold onto their devices much longer than they need to. Much like all of the other unused possessions in your home, you should consider going through your electronics at least once a year to sell off anything you are not currently using. It is often tempting to keep a bin of old smartphones, but you will most likely never even touch them again if you haven’t used them within the last year.

As you simplify your life in regards to technology, you’ll notice that you’ll have less stress. This stress usually comes from all of the distractions that having too many devices can cause.
