Drone HD Video Equipment and Applications

Flying unmanned, radio-controlled (RC) aircraft has already been a favorite pastime of many people for several decades. At present, the RC aircraft is commonly referred to as UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) or drone. After the inclusion of small and lightweight video cameras and wireless video transmitters to the UAV technology, UAV technology has been enhanced and the experience of flying drones has been greatly enhanced.

In a drone that is equipped with a video transmitter and an HD camera, the video imagery is captured by the camera and is simultaneously relayed to the ground station by an analog transmitter. This live video imagery gives the UAV operator a first-person-view (FPV) of what the video camera actually sees. This immediately provides the UAV operator with a situational awareness of the flight of the drone, and enable him to respond instantaneously if there is a need to rectify the UAV’s flight attitude. Using FPV method, the drone operator can easily and realistically pilot the UAV, as if he is inside the cockpit of the drone.

The Equipment

Most commercially available drones with FPV are equipped with standard definition integral video cameras and display, analog video transmitter, and video receiver in order to keep the costs of operating a drone down. However, there are more advanced but costlier alternatives to built-in cameras and transmitters such as those of FPV HD video cameras, lightweight camcorder, and display monitors as well as digital transmitters, and you can readily customize your drone by adding some of this equipment to your drone.

Some more advanced drone setups include the use of on-screen display (OSD), FPV goggles with drone’s telemetry reading and GPS navigation, and autonomous “return to home” features. The “return to home” device generally allows the drone to fly autonomously back to its point of origin whenever it is signaled to do so. Other aftermarket products also include vibration arresters, gimbal mounts to stabilize the camera, head-tracking servo-motors, and head tracking FPV goggles.

Most video transmitters for FPV drones operate at the range of 900 MHz, 1.2, 2.4, and 5.8 Gigahertz. The most common and cheapest of these transmitters operate at 5.8 GHz. However, this frequency generates and produce poor signal penetration, and for this reason, the drone has to be kept within the line-of-sight from the ground station during the flight’s duration.

Applications

The rotary-winged drone, like the Quadcopter, is the most favored UAV by most drone hobbyists. Unlike the original RC “toy” that is usually considered as hobbyist’s toy, the HD video camera-equipped drone can be employed for various applications. The camera-equipped drones, for example, are used in film production, outdoor sporting event coverage, news gathering, aerial photography and videography shoots.

Currently, many civilian government agencies are now utilizing the camera-equipped drones to supplement their manned aerial assets in conducting public safety, security, and law enforcement activities. Due to the added capabilities provided by the FPV and Drone HD cameras, drones, like the quadcopters, can now easily hover and perform tasks that are definitely deemed risky for human pilots such as those tasks of observing, surveying, and inspecting dangerous areas from very difficult angles. Lastly, rotary winged drones, like those of the quadcopters, can be easily deployed and retrieved by the operators of the drones even if they are operating within a highly urbanized area.
