Why am I writing this?  The idea came about when a new client shared horror stories from a previous app developer. All of the drama like a daily shop serial – not to mention here.  Whenever I am talking with my clients they often share mistakes they made when they hire and engaged with a previous mobile app developer. Because they just did not ask questions before hiring them.

Nowadays, it seem like any 20-year-old can build a mobile app, but who will be best for your app and company? You need to find a developer that can understand your industry.

There are thousands of article highlighting what to ask when choosing a mobile app developer but here are 5 key questions will help you drill down to deeper level.

  1. Where can I find example of mobile app you have developed for my industry?

When you ask them what apps have they created in your industry then qualified candidates always be eager to provide you with a list of apps they are creating or at least played a major role in developing with links to each in Apple’s App store and Google play store. The ability to understand your industry is essential in developing an application that will meet your customer needs. And you can be able to gauge whether or not they have skill, experience to develop the type of mobile app you are looking for.

  1. How many apps have you made so far?

This will establish how long the developer has been working on mobile app industry.  Ask for a list of successful apps, read reviews and check star rating to get a feel for the developer’s work. Which is more important than knowing how long they have been in mobile app market.

  1. Do you provide a mobile strategy?

If you spends hundreds of thousands of dollars on an app and no one cared. It happens more usually than you would think. Mobile Application are a major investment. A good mobile strategy contain a deep understanding of users’ needs and market situations. Ask your developer for its mobile strategy.

  1. Are you on the latest technologies?

Most likely, you are looking to hire an app developer because your company and you need an app right! Be sure the candidate you hire is current on the latest and upcoming technologies in mobile app industry. Have he/she started programming with swift? Are they developing for iOS8 and Android lollipop?

  1. How will we communicate during the development process?

The quality of your app often depends on how you communicate with your app designer and developer throughout the development process. Does your developer prefer to chat in person via chat, phone, Skype or email and how often? Ask your partner what their preferred communication process is like.

  1. You should also test their skills with a trial project and a coding test. Coding tests are easy enough to come by. There are online testing platforms such as TestDome: http://www.testdome.com/
    Trial projects should be paid for, as your asking someone to do some work for you after all.

    You will be able to save a lot of time by weeding out a large number of incompetent programmers. Spend your time only on the candidate which worth it.
