Android M versus iOS 9: the Battle for the Supreme Mobile OS Continues

apple-vs-android

At the Apple World Wide Developer Conference (Apple WWDC 15) which was held from June 8 to June 12 at San Francisco, USA, important announcements were made on June 8 2015. These included the official unveiling of iOS 9 along with OS X El Capitan and Watch OS 2. Now that iOS 9 has been announced, let us examine what it brings to the users and in what ways it compares against Android M, the latest Mobile OS offering from Google.

1. Google Android Pay versus Apple Pay

Google has already announced the Android Pay for its Android M OS. This is expected to be a big rival to the Apple Pay, announced back in October 2014. Google is already on the Mobile payment scene with Google Wallet, but the introduction of Android Pay has completely reorganized the mobile payments scene.

With Android Pay, it is possible to completely secure card details and other payment data on the smart phone. It also creates a virtual card on the smart phone, which is in many ways similar to the Secure Tokens of Apple.

Google Pay has been challenging the supremacy of Apple Pay with the help of fingerprint authentication. Also, the Android M interface has a mobile payment interface that aims to make payments via mobiles more expedient as well as secure. In retaliation, Apple’s proprietary mobile payment system has been introduced some time back, which holds a commanding and dominant position in the marketplace.

2. Voice Recognition

Today, voice recognition has acquired a new dimension for mobile OS. Android M comes with an enhanced voice recognition feature, while Apple comes with Siri for iPhone and iPads. Google is also attempting to improve its voice recognition feature for its various search tools. The focus is especially on words that are mispronounced as well as various conversational accents and requests. Additionally, the Google ‘Now on Tap’ which is basically a means to display contextual information can be accessed by long pressing the home button by using the ‘OK Google’ voice command.

3. Interface

Although the Android M interface somewhat retails the Material design look of Android Lollipop, there are a few tweaks to it such as a refreshed app drawer as well as new great looking Clock. For iOS 9, the focus is on adding intelligence to the OS, by tracking location and phone usage. At the same time, there is a new font style, but largely the things are pretty much same as in the previous version. Additionally, IOS 9 also has a new API for the search bar.

4. Privacy

Android M carries a revised permissions system. Apps will not demand permissions all at one time during install, but will request permissions when you request access to the apps. Users will also be able to refuse individual permissions without app ‘borking’. When it comes to Privacy, apple does track phone usage and sends algorithms through emails so that users can optimize some of ‘Siri’s’ new features. However, Google has a patchy reputation for privacy, since it uses customer data to make Google the world’s leading and advertising platform.

Conclusion

While comparing Android M versus Apple’s iOS 9, it seems that iOS 9 scores a tad bit better than Android M, however, since Android M will be fully released later this year, it is too early to comment which OS is a definite winner. Having said that, the two mobile OS giants will continue to slug it out for supremacy in the time to come.
