Top Apps for Keeping Up With Cheltenham

When racing first began at Cheltenham, Queen Victoria had yet to take the throne of the United Kingdom. Photo finishes and the electric telegraph were yet to be invented, so races were judged by eye and the news would take days to reach London.

Nowadays technology has a huge role in controlling, broadcasting and adjudicating races. Race fans around the world will be able to stream live action and reports straight from the scene – provided by the thousands of press representatives who will flock to The Festival.

Here we take a look at the top apps you can use to keep abreast of all the action from this year’s Cheltenham Festival.

Coral

Horse racing has a close association with betting; and British bookmakers Coral have the best app for that on the market. You get full access to their sportsbook with thousands of markets – both live and in play, race streaming and the Coral news site; your comprehensive guide to all the latest racing updates and tips. There’s even a dedicated section for this year’s Cheltenham Festival packed with speculation, results and analysis of the major contenders.

Racing Post

To many The Racing Post is synonymous with racing in this country. Many fans describe this august publication, first released in 1986, as their bible. Every day it arrives bursting with knowledgeable commentary, complete guides to all the day’s races and tips from expert (and often eccentric) pundits.

Now, of course, The Racing Post has a handy iPhone and Android app to help you make your Cheltenham selections wherever you are. Aside from all their news content, neatly repackaged for mobile viewing, you’ll also be able to access full racecards, past results, odds and form.

Image wise nothing compares to strolling around a racecourse with a Racing Post under your arm, but their app can bring you all the crucial info anytime and anywhere.

Fast Burst Camera

If you’re lucky enough to make it down to Cheltenham this year, you’ll want to return with some unforgettable images of the action. Press photographers will set up at the finishing line with their incredibly expensive equipment – but there are some apps that can turn even your phone’s camera to a sport snapping tool.

Fast Burst Camera (£1.36, Android) is one such app which allows your camera to take up to 30 still images per second; perfect for capturing that dramatic photo finish!

Racing UK

Racing UK is one of the leading broadcasters from horse meets and their app is able to stream action from 34 of the top British racecourses. Unlike most betting apps, which require you to have an open bet before streaming a race; Racing UK gives you unlimited access for a £9.99 monthly subscription.

That price may be a bit steep for casual fans, but for diehard followers it is essential. In addition you’ll get racecards, results and tips for every race run in Britain, Ireland or South Africa. Of course you’ll have to decide for yourself what source of tips (if any) you choose to follow; but Racing UK’s range of sources and streaming coverage better all their rivals.
