5 Reasons to Use Custom Software

You must have often heard that it is better to get an off-the-shelf software than a custom software as the former is cheaper, tried and tested, and quickly available. And there is nothing wrong with that advice because such software has been used by many and something which is liked by a number of people can’t be that bad. It is fine to go with the crowd, as the old adage says, “there is safety with the crowd.

However, there are some scenarios where custom software, whether for a website or an application, makes more sense:

  1. Adaptability Matters: There’s no doubt that a ready-made software comes packed with features for handling a lot of things that are necessary to manage a business. There are even options to ask the vendor for additional features. But those features are limited, and they might not sit well with your actual needs. On the contrary, you can completely tweak a custom software according to your taste; the developer treats your words as his gospel and designs what you want.
  2. Life-time support: Since custom software are made by a team from scratch, the people who have developed your software will be able to provide a thorough guidance in case you need help or assistance while assimilating the software into work or if any issues arise in the future. On the other hand, vendors providing support on off-the-shelf software do not have the full information of how it works and might not be able to assist you.
  3. Prepare for changes: As stated earlier, custom software is nearly infinitely adaptable to your requirements and therefore, you can get it tweaked to accommodate changes that happen when your business expands or when operations change. With the traditional software that allows limited customization, it might be too late to reconsider the purchase.
  4. Better doesn’t always mean expensive: While it’s true that off-the-shelf varieties are usually cheaper, there are other costs — customization, changes, — that you need to bear. Moreover, it often happens that what you need has been placed in a higher price bracket. Considering all these, a custom one may be cheaper. And if you are using a freelancer for custom software development, you may just land a great deal.
  5. Gives an edge: The argument that “to win the race, you need better shoes” applies here too. If you are using the same kind of software like everyone else in your competition, it means you will be as good as others. A custom software can give you an edge by giving you an advantage with a unique way of doing business.
