Setting Up Your Own Sound System for a Party at Home

With pubs and clubs charging ever increasing prices, it’s not surprising that so many people are keen on holding house parties instead. To make sure the event is successful though, you will need a decent sound system set up for optimal audio performance. Luckily, you don’t need to be a professional DJ to know how to keep the music pumping in your home.

The Basic Components

While there may seem to be a large range of sound systems available for rent and purchase, in general there are only a few different types of setup. For your home party, you will need the following components to complete your audio network:

  • A sound source (iPod, laptop, etc.)
  • A decent mixer (more on this later)
  • An amplifier to boost the sound
  • Some speakers to transmit the music

If you are connecting multiple sound sources, e.g. if you have a microphone and an iPod, you will need a mixer to combine these signals. If not, you can get by with just an amplifier connecting the speakers to the source.

Ideal Speaker Placement

Where you set up your speakers plays a large role in how well the music sounds throughout the party. Ideally, you’ll have one central room in which people can dance while other spaces are left for conversation and mingling. In this central zone, the following rules of thumb will apply for speaker placement:

  • Put the speakers as far left and right as possible in the space provided
  • Position the speakers so their lower edge is just above the audience’s head
  • Put at least 30 cm between the speakers and the walls and ceiling

This should give everyone excellent sound quality regardless of what music you are playing. This is also a setup which should be possible in any type of home.

Powering Up and Down

Lastly, you should be aware of how to turn on and turn off your new sound system. Never randomly switch on each component as there is a high chance that you will cause irreversible damage. When powering on the system, this is the correct order:

  1. Sound source
  2. Mixer
  3. Amplifier
  4. Speakers

Also make sure that the volume is turned all the way down on each component before you turn everything on. When switching everything off, you simply go in the opposite direction.

  1. Speakers
  2. Amplifier
  3. Mixer
  4. Sound source

As you can see, it’s just a matter of working in one direction and then the other when turning your sound system on and off.

Pre-party Sound Checks

Finally, you may be interested to know how to check the audio quality to ensure optimal sound quality throughout the party. To do this simply play your track list and go through the following procedures:

  • Slowly increase the volume to test the maximum level
  • Adjust the channel fader and master output as required
  • Play with the EQ on your mixer to fine tune the audio

You will need to listen to the sound from the middle of the room after each change to see if it has enhanced or deteriorated the quality.

This information should give you the basics of how to set up a sound system at any home party. With this advice, you and your guests can enjoy some truly thumping tunes during your next big event.
