The Intricacies Behind Online Gaming Technology

The advances we observe in gaming today could be attributed to the successful implementation and adoption of technology in the industry. From the day the 8 bit console became popular in the 1980s, the gaming industry has achieved so much and probably gained more popularity than any other form of software in recent times. Starting out with 8 bits of graphics and cheezy storylines, modern games have almost mimicked real life situations with infinite storylines that appeal to users.

Another milestone in the gaming industry occurred when network gaming was first introduced, fusing the concept of gaming with social networking. MMORPGs or Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Games have made the physical world smaller thereby bridging the gap between players from various corners of the world speaking unfamiliar languages.

Indeed, online games broke the concept of video games as ‘antisocial’ because it allows several people to play together through the internet or local area network connection which is made up of a network of PCs connected via a server. At the heart of this network is the server which handles the gaming environment including the movements of each player while other aspects such as graphics and sounds are taken care of by  each local computer.

Need for Speed

Before online gaming technology came about and became so much advanced, hardcore gamers only needed high quality hardware specs. But the added factor of getting connected to other PCs means that internet connection speed is now a big deal for seamless gameplay. The most common requirement is a broadband connection with a PC with at least 2GB of memory and 2.6 dual core processors with support for hyperthreading – quad core, i5 or i7 processors are still considered to be better.

Give me Strength

Typically, in a network, servers usually comprise of several computers. Each end-user computer is called a client. Thus, it can be said that in the heart of the network lies the server. During the game play itself, the server receives data from all clients individually, and throws back processed data to these clients. The server then reads all user-actions, interprets and sends them out simultaneously to each client, which is sometimes called the ‘state of world’. This way, users experience real-time action. However, because all these processes occur in a split second, you don’t just require faster servers but also powerful local computers that can handle and process these requests.

In general, modern day online games can be grouped into two broad categories namely, centralized and distributed server-based games. For example, MMORPG games could be classified under centralized server-based games (read more info about MMORPG games). This is simply because their gaming environment exists 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (i.e. non-stop) so that players can log in or out at anytime. Hence, gameplay is infinite and the storyline is progressive; almost a replica of the real world.

On the other hand we have distributed server-based games wherein a server is pretty much another PC linking to other computers in a specified game. You can simply view this as the exact opposite of centralized server-based games. Examples include interactive games on casino platforms (read more info about casino platforms).

To conclude, online gaming technology has come so far in such a short period of time. This has contributed to the development of computer and network technology as the demand for faster and more powerful systems and devices increase amongst gamers. As long as these advancements can keep up with demand, it can only be a good thing for the future of the gaming industry and the enjoyment of its users.
