This New Wearable Tech Can Calm Your Chattering Mind

What do you think about Mondays? It’s the start of another great week, the perfect time for a fresh start! Well that’s a nice way to see it if you’re living in utopia. In reality however, you have to wake up early. You have to deal with the annoying rush hour traffic. And if things aren’t going too well, your boss will already be sending you nagging emails before you step into the office…

Alright, let’s think about something less painful instead. How about our daily routine or rituals before or after work? Some people love to have their daily dose of fragrant tea or espresso. Some do their favorite workout. Some listen to music or read a book. And some like to meditate. Believe it or not, no matter how obscure or minute they seem, rituals are actually extremely effective. According to a report on Scientific American, it is found that rituals can reduce anxiety, boost confidence, motivate greater effort and improve subsequent performance.

Essentially, the point of performing a ritual is to calm your mind. Meditation, in particular, works to great effect. This is where this new piece of wearable tech called “Muse” can help – to calm your mind so you can be more productive. On surface, it’s just a simple headband, which doesn’t even look very trendy and isn’t something you want to wear while strolling around the neighborhood. But when it’s used together with its app “Calm,” your Muse can analyze your brain signals to help you relax.

So how actually does it work? According to the guide on Muse’s official website, after connecting your headband with your smartphone through Bluetooth, put it on, seat comfortably and close your eyes. Then stay focused and undisturbed for 3 minutes. The headband will be able to analyze the electrical signals emitted from your brain, and through the instructions you hear in the app, you will be guided to a beach, where your task is to keep the weather calm. Through continuous practice, you will acquire the skill to keep your brain focused even in stressful situations. After the exercise, data about your brain activity and performance will be shown. The system itself operates like a game; points will be earned depending on how well your brain performs, and more features will be unlocked when you reach specific milestones.

You might think that this just works like other meditation tools that can be found in the app store, but it doesn’t even come close. Since Muse is able to detect and measure your brain signals, you will get real-time feedback as well as instructions specifically tailored to your stress levels, so you can aim for better results. And no worries, your Muse won’t hack your mind, and it uses the same EEG (electroencephalography) technology that doctors use in hospitals so it’s totally safe. Though $299 might not be cheap for a 3-minute meditation session every day, it’s still good to know that the importance of quiet – for both the hectic external environment and our noisy restless minds – is addressed.
