Is There Something Good In Online Gaming?

Many believe that online gaming carries nothing but disadvantages—eats much time, facilitates if not promotes violence, causes unproductivity, and the list goes on. But have we ever looked into it more closely to see the bigger picture?

Playing MMORPG or massively multiplayer online role playing game may, for instance, develop social skills as it is a kind of online adventure that allows its players to assume particular roles and act in a series of events while interacting with other players. Through this interaction, the interpersonal skills of the participants, especially the kids, are honed and enhanced. This is a clear advantage of online gaming we often overlook.

This kind of game, although may seem unattractive at first, can actually teach its players a lesson on taking risks and knowing when to stop placing bets. It is also a good venue to kill time without spending a single cent. We take for granted the fact that online gaming can actually teach us valuable lessons on handling finances.

Apart from the two mentioned, there are concrete and empirical studies suggesting that playing online games, even those that are considered violent, have the capacity to promote critical learning and mind sharpening presumably because of the brain exercises the players go through as they form tactics to defeat their opponents. There are also professionals who believe that certain video games may actually help in dealing with stress and depression. Since there are more females who may be suffering from said conditions, it may be assumed, at least to a certain extent, that said games may aid them work on their emotional and psychological dilemmas. After all, research proposes that there are more females who engage in online games through their smart phone apps than males. Lastly, there are also journal articles that establish the connection between the reflex improvement and gaming.

Considering the aforesaid pros, we should keep in mind that gaming, internet, apps, and other products of technology may have their inherent disadvantages but certainly, they also have advantages. At the end of the day, it is about striking a perfect balance. And just like in anything, if it is a bit too much, it is no longer good.

  1. I agree with you Joseph. Gaming does sharpens the mind. As gaming requires attention of mind and lateral thinking, especially in puzzle and horror based games. It makes our mind work more and more.

  2. I think online gaming is not usually bad in my opinion, sometime you can learn lesson about team works or problem analyzing and social skills also. But don’t be obsessed of gaming, that will terminate your future.
