How to Choose the Right Template for Your Site

template

Web templates have become very popular with designers all over the world as tools for building websites in a simple and affordable way. Since they don’t require coding, they can even be used by people who have little technical knowledge of web design. However, selecting an appropriate web template for your site can be a very long and frustrating decision. Here are some tips which can help you make the right choice.

1. Check the layout

Before selecting a template, you need to decide what kind of layout you’d like for your site. For instance, the layout for a news or magazine site is not similar to the layout for an e-commerce site. To get an idea of the layout which would be appropriate, you could visit several similar sites in your niche. Choosing a template with the right kind of layout will allow you to build a site which will be appropriate for your audience.

2. Flexibility

Flexibility is a very important element for any site. Having a template which is flexible will allow you to customize your site sufficiently according to your needs. Therefore, before purchasing any template, study its features and find out if you can change elements such as color, layout and icons.

3. Research on the theme creator

Some unscrupulous people have been known to create templates which contain malicious code. Using such templates might lead to your blog being hacked or failing to function properly. Therefore, before using any template to build your site, it is important to first verify the credibility of the theme creator. Carry out some research to find out what other users are saying about them. It would be advisable to stick to themes from well known providers such as MotoCMS, Themeforest, StudioPress and Elegant Theme. Such providers usually verify themes before listing them for sale.

4. Template updates

Before downloading and using a template, find out when it was updated last. Avoid any template which has not been updated for more than one year. Outdated templates might not have some recent features which could be useful for your site. In addition, a site built using such a template is usually more vulnerable to attack from hackers. Therefore, be sure to select a theme which has been updated regularly.

5. Watch the live demo

Many providers offer live demos which show how their templates work. Viewing the live preview can therefore help you make a more informed decision. Take time to browse the preview and compare the different functions and layouts available. Test the template to find out if it can be customized and to what extent. Only make a decision after you have tested and verified the web template.
