What You Should Look For In A Web Designer

There are a lot of web designers out there who are either willing to take all of your money and run, or simply do not know how to properly design and build a website. Given that starting a web design business can have relatively low startup costs, combined with the fact that people are becoming more tech savvy, means there has been a flood of web designers on the market. Consumers need to be more careful when they are picking a web designer to build their website for them. Considering how important an online presence is to the success of a business, it only makes sense that you need to do your homework before choosing who to go with. According to the website Atilus, the average professional website costs $2,000, but many can cost triple, or even quadruple that. So why do people think a student charging intern prices could produce similar results?

Price is not Everything!

The saying is true that you get what you pay for. This goes for web designers as much as it does for cars, food or anything else. Although it might be tempting to use the student charging $100 for a website, chances are that person does not understand the fundamentals of good design. If you are looking for a shoe design website, for example, you have to know what formats will work to be able to showcase your work. Chances are this kind of site is going to look much different than the website of a sports agent who is looking to get the next Michael Jordan signed to the Chicago Bulls. Only a true professional web designer can properly develop a site that looks and feels like a site in any given industry should.

This knowledge and skill typically comes at a price however, and that price can leave many businesses in shock. But before you pass out due to sticker shock, consider this: would you want a doctor who said he’d only charge you $20 to operate on your child? Or, if your car needs major repairs, are you going to leave the work to a mechanic who doesn’t know how much to charge for services he only kind of knows how to perform? The answer is that you are unlikely to do these things, so why leave your business’s website up to someone who doesn’t have the knowledge or experience either? You want someone who has the skills it takes to create the website that your company deserves and expects. Look for a web designer who has a clear idea of what it takes to develop a high quality site, and isn’t offering rock bottom prices. A basement-level price is an indicator that they do not have the greatest design skills. At the same time, anyone who quotes you a price that you consider extremely high should be able to explain where the costs are coming from.

Do They Have Integrity?

References can be an amazing tool when looking for a web designer. Most people who are looking for a web designer purely look at thewebsites the designer has created and the price of the quote, and makes a decision from there. This can result in a major backfire for a company, costing more time and money than if they had looked for the right person to begin with. Ask for references and follow up with them to see if the web designer has integrity. Do they do what they say they are going to do? Was the work completed on time? Were there any surprises? These are all things to look for in a web designer when you are looking to have your website created.
