7 Tips for the Ultimate Infographic

The goal of a successful infographic is to give your audience content they want or need to read in an engaging, eye-catching format.  Seems easy enough, right? In reality, it’s trickier than you might think. It’s easy to get carried away and create an infographic that may look like a work of art to you, but is extremely confusing to your audience.

How to Create the Right Infographic

Below are seven tips for creating infographics that are eye-catching, informative, and highly shareable:

1. Start with a Message and the Big Picture

The point of an infographic is to illustrate a point.  It is important to think about the message you want to convey in addition to the big picture.  What do you want viewers to think about after viewing your infographic?  More important, why do you want viewers to think about that message after viewing your infographic?  What benefit will the infographic have for your industry or business?

2. Graphic Design Basics

Infographics need to be eye-catching.  Use solid graphic design principles to ensure that your infographics pop.  A few principles of graphic design include organization and how you will draw the viewer’s eye though the graphic display in a logical manner. It is also important to design infographics that users will be able to see clearly without reaching for a pair of reading glasses.

3. Keep Infographics Simple

Stick to one point per infographic.  You can publish hundreds of individual infographics on the same broad topic (e.g. how a small thing can make a large impact).  Keep everything easy to see and easy to understand.

4. Readability Is Important

Your viewers need to be able to read the statistics displayed in your infographic.  First and foremost, an infographic should be a method of clearly displaying information and illustrating a point.  Viewers should be able to scan infographics much like viewers should be able to scan text.  The best infographics can display basic information within a few seconds.  Viewers can decide whether or not to look further.

5. Statistics

Almost nothing can compare to a few solid statistics.  Even better, you can make the same statistics illustrate different concepts.  Add credibility to your infographics with solid and engaging statistics.

6. Sharability

This point goes back to the mantra; make everything as easy as possible for users. Make sure to put those social sharing buttons close to your infographic so your audience can spread your content far across the web!

7. Cite Your Sources

Your English teacher was right.  You always should cite your sources.  Add more credibility to your infographic, and give credit where credit is due.  It is more difficult for others to disparage your ideas when they are backed by experts at Harvard and Oxford.
