Electronic Health Record System: Streamlining Your Workflow

electronic health

Paperwork and filing are overwhelming and costly. You waste your time and money on copying, and retrieving paper files. That’€™s the reason that paperwork is now a thing of the past. Electronic Health Record Systems are the ideal solution that moves your office into the future. Electronic health records (EHR) are a digital version of a patient’€™s medical history and other reports. An EHR is basically used for diagnosis and treatment. An EHR is more beneficial than paper records since it allows to:

  • Track data over time.
  • Categorize patients who are due for preventive visits.
  • Monitor how patients measure up to various parameters like vaccinations etc.
  • Develop overall quality of care in a practice.

The system is designed to capture and represent data that accurately captures the state of patient at all times. It facilitates for an entire patient history to be viewed without the need to track down the patient’€™s previous medical record volume and ensures that the data is accurate and appropriate.

Electronic Health records, though, have been introduced in the 1960’€™s with the idea of recording a patient’€™s information electronically but couldn’t be recognized worldwide. It gained popularity when in 2004, when US President George W. Bush emphasized on promoting the adoption of Electronic Health Record systems for every American. Bush showed his commitment to healthcare industry and doubled the funding for health care projects and called for widespread adoption of EHRs by 2014. Thus, EHRs started gaining strength. In 2009, Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health (HITECH) Act was passed as a part of President Obama’€™s American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA). ARRA encouraged switching to electronic records. To help providers’ better care across Medicare patients, new set of laws proposed creating Accountable Care Organizations. These organizations help in reducing healthcare costs and meet performance standards to be rewarded. This, thus, represents the key role of HER in capturing patient data within an ACO.

There are many practitioners using Electronic Health Records while others are still thinking on buying one. Physicians who implement EHRs largely reach their business goals of lower cost and improved patient care much easily. Most of them can have the increased availability of floor space which has been earlier occupied by paper records, thus, reducing administrative costs. It also leads to error reduction and paperwork reduction. This paperless solution is safeguarded at every level for full security. Through data encryption, password protection, EHRs give doctors peace of mind.

With the rapid growth in technology, healthcare providers will look forward to integrate software to technology to connect patients and other providers. More and more social networking and mobile technologies will be used to include greater connectivity and collaboration among providers. Over the next years, all healthcare providers will be faced with the changes for the reduction of medical errors, continuity of care and support for outcome and research information. Therefore, it’€™s time now to take necessary steps towards the vision of paperless systems that includes digital documentation of all clinical and administrative care processes.
