Pros and Cons of Different Kinds of Printer Cartridges

Printing technology has evolved in recent decades. New and more efficient technologies are being introduced to the market by leading printer manufacturing companies. The printing cartridge is an essential part of any printer. Without it the printing process will not take place at all. There are many technologies used in these cartridges as there are many types of cartridges which can be broadly classified into two categories. These are Ink cartridges and Toner cartridges.

Ink-Cartridges

Ink cartridges are mainly used in inkjet printers. Toner cartridges can be seen in laser printers. But the categorization does not end here. There are many other subcategories of printing cartridges like refilled, remanufactured, compatible or OEM. This categorization is based on the manufactures or functionality of these products. Here is a brief description of these cartridges. It will help you to choose the right one according to your need the next time you go to buy one.

OEM Cartridges:

OEM is known as Original Equipment Manufacturer cartridges. These cartridges are manufactured by the same company who manufactured the printer. For example, an ink cartridge of HP can be called as the OEM cartridge of a HP manufactured printer. These cartridges are famous for the high quality of print they produce. But they come at a high cost.  The cost of print is the main concern for the OEM cartridges.

Compatible Cartridges:

These are non-branded generic cartridges. They are manufactured to work in a specific printer at a much less price than OEM cartridges. Compatible catridges are an excellent choice for the customers who have a small budget. But you would not have a print as good as OEM cartridges. That does not mean that these cartridges are not good. It is ideal for standard printer use. It can efficiently suit the needs of a normal user

Remanufactured Cartridges:

Many people think that compatible and remanufactured cartridges are almost the same. It is not true. There is a basic difference. A compatible cartridge is build from scratch and remanufactured ones are used cartridges recycled with new parts. Remanufactured toner cartridges provide a cost effective and environment-friendly solution to the user. The latest technologies ensure a decent quality print from remanufactured cartridges if your printer is efficient.

Refill Cartridges:

Refill cartridges are different from remanufactured cartridges. Remanufactured cartridges are made by replacing the defective parts of a cartridge. Refill cartridges are the cartridges with refilled ink. A remanufactured cartridge can be refilled and used. On the other hand you cannot use a defective cartridge by refilling it. It is the cheapest way to get prints. It is also the most environment friendly option. There is no need to assemble new parts or waste materials. Refill can be done at home using the home refill kit. There are also professional refill services available. Refilling done by professionals is more efficient.

Conclusion

I didn’t realize re-manufactured cartridges were even in existence. I thought old cartridges were either thrown away, or recycled simply for the plastic. I think it would be good to find out the history on a re-manufactured cartridge before purchasing it. If a worn label was all the damage done, purchasing it anew would be akin to buying a brand new cartridge. Even if damage was extensive, I’m sure re-manufacturers can do a pretty good job of making like-new cartridges, regardless of what the damage was to the original ink holder.

This is some really good information about refilling ink cartridges. It is good to know that refilling is the cheapest options. I wonder if there is a store or service that can do multiple refills for you at once.
