The Internet is a hub of many websites with similar and sometimes different types of domain names. When starting a new website, you will of course need a domain for the site and it is essential that you know the options you have for this. Generally, webmasters have the option of either buying an existing name or actually registering for a new name. If you are new in this field of web hosting and domains, you might find yourself confused and not sure about your best option. Since the Internet houses millions of websites today, getting a name that is entirely different might of course be difficult. You might have to reconsider your urge of having a name of your choice. While in most cases you will have to settle on getting an already existing domain name, it is essential you understand that this option has its share of benefits and drawbacks that you should be aware of.

Existing traffic

First of all, existing domain names have the advantage of benefiting from traffic that was directed to the previous site. In this case, if such a website had been enjoying a good amount of traffic, you might be lucky to have all of it landing on your website instantly. The customers who used to visit the older website might not have an idea that the previous domain name was renewed in a different website. When starting, such traffic might all be yours, and if you are wise, converting the traffic to sales shouldn’t be a difficult task.

SEO benefits

Another benefit is that as far as SEO is concerned, you might be lucky if the older owner had been serious to include relevant keywords in the name of the domain. This might instantly reward you with a higher ranking on the search engines. In short, you are going to benefit from having a name that is optimized already, which will definitely work to your advantage. Within a short period of time, it is possible for you to move even higher on the ranking if you invest more in SEO. However, it is essential you ensure that the existing name you want to buy didn’€™t use black hat SEO tactics otherwise search engines might severely punish you for the act. If such things are ignored, you might find yourself in a fix in the long run.

Buying a domain name: useful tips

Before you finalize on a domain name for your website, there are so many things which you should take into account. Most importantly, be keen to check on how the name ranks presently so that you can decide whether it will work in your favor or not. The domain should have neither internal page linkages nor links directing to another site (as I have learned from the “Surftown Domain” campaign). Also, before you buy the name, consider its age and learn whether the cost you will incur for link building and content services is worthy or not. A good name is one that does not have a penalty, and the existing traffic of the URL should not involve any form of cheating.
