When it comes to developing links, Google has become more and more concerned with the links marketers and SEOs are building of late. With the Penguin 2.0 algorithm update in full swing, it’s best to brush up on your post-Penguin link building skills and see if there is anything you can do to make your links more pleasing to the eyes of Google.
Avoid links in blog comments
Occasionally they can be useful and relevant to a discussion, but 99% of the time the links in blog comments these days are spam, and Google hates spam. Your link could get devalued just for being on the same page with a bunch of other spammy links, and that’s no good for anyone. Plus, you have to deal with the nofollow attribute which is attached to almost every single link left in a blog comment; no passing of PageRank so why bother?
Use tools to identify opportunities
There are a lot of free and low-cost SEO tools out there that can help you prune your link profile (get rid of the low quality links) and identify opportunities for building high quality links in the future. Moz.com offers Open Site Explorer, and MajesticSEO.com also offers useful SEO tools.
Varied anchor text is key
Having a variety of anchor text for your links is so very important. One of the identifying features of many spam links built pre-Penguin was exact match anchor text; hundreds if not thousands of links with the same anchor text were built, sometimes for the same website. When you are creating links, shake things up, and above all make your anchor text look natural!
Social media is where the value is
Not only are social signals themselves a good thing to have buzzing around your website, social channels are great places to generate links. An example would be writing a post for your blog and publishing it. You can then take the link to that post and share it on your social channels in order to promote awareness of your new post!
Check out your competition
You can find places to build links by observing the kinds of links your competition is building. Using the same tools you used to analyze your own link profile, take a look at theirs and see what’s going on. Analyze the quality of their links, the quality of your links, and combine all of this information to create a master list of link building opportunities.
Link building doesn’t have to be complicated, especially if you have a plan laid out before you even get started. Based on the information you’ve gained from analyzing the link profiles of your business and the profile of at least one competitor you can determine what kinds of links you have, what kinds to need to build to improve your profile, and where to find those opportunities.
You also need to take into consideration that building (and pruning) a link profile in order to make it the best that it can be takes time. It is not an overnight thing, or even something that can be accomplished in a month. It might take two months, or even three to start seeing serious results. In the past you could build more links in less time, but thanks to Penguin and overall web standards changes those kinds of tactics arenât worth the trouble they will cause sooner or later.
