Tips To Make Your Smartphone’s Battery Last Longer

A lot of people complain that their smartphone always runs out of power. Just when you are about to read an important email, for example, your phone suddenly shuts down because it ran out of juice. If you do not have access to a power source, you will have to bear having a dead and unusable phone in your pocket. You do not have to be always in this dilemma, though, if you know of some tricks that can help prolong your smartphone’s battery life. Here are some tips on how you can make your smartphone’s battery last longer:

  • Refrain from Installing Ad-Supported Apps

You may love to use free apps on your phone because you do not need to spend money to make use of the apps’ functionalities. Unfortunately, free apps may also come at a price. Most of the free apps are ad supported that’s why you can use them for free. Unfortunately, studies suggest that the ads used in free apps can drain battery life so you might as well refrain from using ad supported apps. You can upgrade your favorite apps to a paid version to get rid of the annoying and battery draining ads.

  • Disable Push Notifications

Do you really need to receive a notification on your smartphone whenever somebody likes your photo on Facebook? If not, consider disabling the notifications on your smartphone to save battery life. Apps that send you push notifications can drain your phone’s battery faster because power is needed for these applications to work in the background. If you have enabled push notification for a social media app, for example, the app will keep checking for updates in the background so it can send you notification whenever you receive a new message or a notification on your post. To prevent apps from draining your smartphone’s battery, disable push notifications. Alternatively, you can choose to only receive notifications from important apps. You may, for example, opt to only receive push notifications from your email or from RingCentral’s VoIP app so you get alerted whenever you have incoming business communication. Notifications from gaming apps, on the other hand, may not be as important so you can forego receiving alerts whenever those dinosaur eggs in your virtual Jurassic Park are ready to hatch.

  • Lower Your Screen’s Brightness

A maxed out screen brightness can contribute to your smartphone’s shorter batter life so consider adjusting your screen brightness if you want to use your smartphone a little longer. You can also set up your smartphone so the screen goes off after a period of inactivity. Doing this can improve your phone’s battery life.

  • Use Wi-Fi to Connect to the Internet

One of the best features of the smartphone is its ability to wirelessly connect to the internet and you have different options to get internet access on your smartphone.  You can use Bluetooth, cellular data or Wi-Fi to get online. Unfortunately, using Bluetooth or cellular data can drain your phone’s battery a lot faster than when you use Wi-Fi. You should refrain from using Bluetooth or cellular data if you have access to a Wi-Fi network.

  • Turn Off Your Phone’s Wi-Fi Connection if not in Use

If you are an in an area where there is no wireless internet coverage, make sure to turn off your Wi-Fi. There is no use to keeping your Wi-Fi on if you can’t connect to a wireless network. Your phone will also keep looking for a Wi-Fi range if you keep its Wi-Fi connection open. This process uses power and can drain your battery a lot faster.

Yes i knew about brightness and the other tweaks you’ve mentioned. But really i did not know that wifi uses less power than mobile data. And for android users i would list an app named as one power guard. It is an awesome app and it saves my 80 percent of battery at the end of the day even with rough use. But this app need super users permissions so you would have to root your phone.

    Hi Christine,

As you know, to gain something, we have to lose something. You can improve the battery life of your device by limiting its functionality.

Thanks for sharing these useful tips, I hope they’ll work for me because I can’t get it why my iPhone goes only for 10 hrs a day… I have already tried some of your points (the brightness for example), but I guess it’s going to be the 4G connection which eats my battery…

Ultimately, the best tip to prolong the life of your smartphone is to stop using it. It’s a shame that we have these smart devices in our pocket that have the same computational power as a PC, but they have such poor battery life. I hope that they will fix this issue in the next decade if not sooner…
