The Big Website Design Question: Static or CMS?

When it comes to the design of your website, there’s one question that will need to be answered fairly early on in the process, which is whether you’ll go for a static website design or choose to have a content management system.

web design

A website with an in-built content management system is dynamic. This means that the content can be very simply changed at the drop of a hat – whether this is the copy, images or even adding new pages, which is a great tool for an internet marketing campaign. On the other hand, a static website, does exactly what it says on the tin, it is unmoveable and unchangeable by somebody who doesn’t understand how to code a website.

Obviously, there are pros and cons of both sides of the argument and in the next section of this article I will touch on each of them.

  • Ability to change:

Obviously, the choice here has to be a website design which incorporates a CMS. While changes can be made to a static website design, it will leave you dependent on your design company who will have to make each change for you – unless you are proficient in coding yourself. So if you are reliant on a designer to do the changes make sure you pick one that is easy to contact and will be able to get things done on time. There’s nothing worse than chasing someone in order to complete simple tasks.

  • Cost:

If, as a small business, you are looking to keep the costs low when designing your website, a static website will come at a vastly reduced cost. However, you need to take into account the maintenance costs that may continue – check with your website designer how much they will charge to update your site.

  • Speed of build:

As they are less complicated to build a static site will be ready to launch much quicker than a website incorporating a CMS. However a CMS is more of an investment so if you’re serious about having a high quality and sustainable site a CMS might be best for you.

  • Functionalities:

Static websites often have limited functionalities and if you’re looking for a wide range of features on your website – online bookings for instance, dynamic is really the only way to go. In contrast to that if you are just looking for a simple space to host your portfolio and contact details then you should definitely consider going with static.

A website is an essential tool to an online marketing campaign, although as a start-up, in the first few months you could probably rely on a temporary solution. If you’re looking to drive your business forward, create new leads and build it into an empire a website is absolutely crucial to your progress. According to Big Fork, a website design Norwich based company said: “There are plus points for both types of website, but really, if you’re looking for long term progress for your business, it is well worth taking the plunge and investing in a fully functional website with a CMS”. Although some may argue that a small business is the only kind which can get away with a static site, if you’re looking to progress your business, the ability to add news, engage with your web visitors and expand the services you offer is an important aspect of developing your business.
