Fans of open world action adventure games are certainly going to be anticipating the launch of Watch Dogs – the latest title from games company Ubisoft. The game is set for launch across most core platforms later this year and has already received some rave reviews from critics.
Unlike other open world series, the makers believe that the game’s focus on a high-tech world of computer hacking and is completely unique and sets it apart from other open world offerings. Throughout the game players must employ abilities to hack various city elements to continue to drive them through the storyline.
Storyline
The story focuses on a central character, Aiden Pearce, who is a highly skilled hacker able to get his way into the city’s Central Operating System. Examples include hacking into phone lines to steal data on bank accounts, or intercepting traffic lights to cause accidents. Objectives in the game may be to kill certain targets or even prevent innocent victims from being killed.
The premise revolves around a world where information technology is increasingly essential, but who exactly is controlling the computers that human kind depends on? The story is set in an alternative view of Chicago, which is run by a super computer that controls most functions in the city as well as storing data on every citizen and the stories follow Aiden’s activities.
One demo has shown his assassination attempt on a media mogul who escaped a murder charge despite his guilt. The game features combat elements with stealth and parkour and players can also gain insights into the city’s residents through augmented reality feeds which may give an indication of their expected behaviour and reactions to situations.
While the high tech information technology world is its biggest sell, the game play doesn’t all take place on foot. Ubisoft has worked with other studios to develop a series of vehicles with ultimate performance. One studio was Ubisoft Reflections who were responsible for the popular Driver series so this should give an indication of the quality of result. No less than 65 vehicles are showcased in the game, and everyone is complete with state of the art handling.
Multiplayer Elements
The game is said to include multiplayer features for online play including a feature whereby a player may gain control of surveillance cameras to hack the main player.
Platforms
Ubisoft has announced that Watch Dog is set to be available for all home consoles including PC, Playstation3, Xbox 360 and Wii U. The game’s developers have stated though that the gameplay on the Wii U will be the most ‘natural fit’ for the game.
Launch
Watch Dogs is expected to be launched for Christmas 2013 with many online retailers already listing it for pre-order. Ubisoft have indicated they expect it to compete with other open world games such as Grand Theft Auto. Press reviews of the game have already been positive and the game has won several awards already for excellence so there is much to look forward to. Rumours have it that Ubisoft is also developing a Watch Dogs movie to complement the game.
