Finding a soul-mate isn’t always easy, but with help from the Internet, it’s often possible for people to broaden their dating horizons. The Statistic Brain website says that about 40 million Americans have tried online dating. Living in a small town is one thing that makes it harder to date, but difficulties can also plague people who have certain health issues or off-the-wall interests. Fortunately, there are now plenty of websites that assist people with finding love online, and many of them focus on very specific characteristics so that visitors are no longer seen as societal outcasts, and instead fit right in with other online community members.
Letting Furries Find New Flames
Furries are a group of people who have a love of anthropomorphic animals, that is, creatures who behave or look like a blend between humans and animals. Pounced.org is a free personal site that connects these enthusiasts so friendships or even romances can blossom. The website was started by two furries from the Washington DC area who began the effort after realizing that no other alternatives existed.
Matching People with STDs
Although sexual health testing centers around the United States have made it much easier for people to confidentially determine whether or not they have a sexually transmitted infection or disease, individuals still sometimes have difficulty navigating the dating scene, or admitting health issues to a new partner. The Internet makes easier to potentially find a partner, but also connect with new friends who are going through some of the same challenges. Sexual health problems can sometimes make people feel stigmatized by the general society, but it’s usually easier to maintain a sense of well-being with support from like-minded people.
Websites like PositiveSingles.com and STDFriends.com take uncertainty out of the equation altogether by letting users connect directly with others who are already open about an STD diagnosis. Some of these websites claim to have hundreds of thousands of members, which could be appealing to someone who is looking for a companion, but isn’t interested in the potential drama of explaining a sexually transmitted disease to someone who’s clean.
Showcasing the Best and Brightest?
With the controversy or tagline of “Online Dating Minus Ugly People,” the website DarwinDating.com might most readily appeal to people who are looking for a trophy husband or wife. In keeping with the evolutionary theme of the website’s title, users are asked to rate photographs of fellow visitors on a graphic scale where the highest ranking is the silhouette of a fully developed human being, and the lowest rating is the outline of a monkey. However, despite the potential of finding a hottie here, the tone of the website content borders on cruel. It even includes a long list of banned characteristics such as red hair with too many freckles, wide hips on men, ski jump noses and hairy feet, suggesting that some potential suitors on the site may be so focused on physical attributes that it would difficult to build a relationship on anything else.
As the three examples above show, the online dating world has become increasingly specialized, which could make it easier for people to find love despite a chronic health problem or having an interest that may be perceived as strange.
