Reasons Why Ubuntu Phone Will Be A Big Hit

Nowadays, when some people talk about Linux, they actually mean Ubuntu. Created in 2004 by Canonical, Ubuntu has become the most popular Linux distribution today, currently used by millions of users from all over the world. But the ambition of the guys behind Ubuntu does not limit within the desktop and server operating system market. They want Ubuntu to succeed in the mobile market as well. Early this year, a plan for Ubuntu was revealed by Canonical, gaining a lot of hype, excitement and support from fans.

However, together with the support, just like any other start-up project, Ubuntu Phone also gets a lot of doubts and criticisms. And the doubts and criticisms are backed by very logical reasons, that the mobile  operating system market is already dominated by Apple iOS and Google Android, so Ubuntu is a bit too late here. Moreover, Canonical does not have a hardware manufacturer for their phones.

I myself totally agree with all the doubts and criticisms toward Ubuntu Phone. Ubuntu obviously has many disadvantages and is a late joiners. However, as an optimist and a loyal Linux fanboy, I still believe Ubuntu can still become a big hit in the mobile market. And here are the reasons why I believe so:

Like Android, Ubuntu is open source

If you have followed the developing of Android, you will know that being open source is the main reason of the success of Android. Because Android is open source,  any mobile manufacturer can use Android on their devices to save the developing cost for a new operating system. And they can build and customize their Android devices according to their designs to make it totally unique, standing apart from the crowd. And Ubuntu Phone OS is based on Linux just like Android. That is why I believe if Android could succeed, Ubuntu Phone can too.

The market of mobile devices is still growing, and there is still room for other players

Although iOS and Android are dominating the mobile market, it does not mean that there is no chance for a new player to join and succeed. In the technology world, new things come and conquer all the time. Ubuntu has proved this by becoming the most popular Linux distro for desktop. So with their ambition, passion and creativity, they surely can do it again or even better in the mobile market. And do not forget that Ubuntu also has a huge fan base who always love and support Ubuntu’s products.

Ubuntu is different from and even better than other smartphone OS’s

You will understand what I mean if you have watched Canonical’s demo of the Ubuntu Phone. And after testing and using Ubuntu Phone, many iOS and Android users have admitted that Ubuntu Phone has more cool and innovating features than their own devices. The swipe action that let you glide through apps and menu in Ubuntu Phone has enticed a lot of users. And the design of the Ubuntu Phone even impressed the the iOS fans, who are well-known for being very choosy about product design. In short, the Ubuntu Phone is an outstanding product of its own. It is there in the mobile market to target  the most selective users.

I’m very excited about Ubuntu OS. I’m sure it’ll be more poppular than Sailfish OS (not sure about Firefox OS, though) because it’s different. It’s not users got used to, and curiosity is a big factor in this case. People will actively use something new as long as it doesn’t have a lot of bugs.

I agree with you completely, Brian. Everyone who knows and loves Ubuntu will be all over this phone. Just like android, the main selling point amongst techies will be it’s open-source OS.
