Using Modern Technology To Improve Guitar Technique

Learning how to play the guitar isn’t always as simple as many people make it out to be, but that shouldn’t discourage you from jumpstarting your music career. While beginning guitar techniques are not impossible to get a handle on, the finer points of the instrument can be incredibly difficult to master. Investing time and effort is key.

This being the case, there are many different types of technology that can help today’s guitar players to improve their craft, most of which are relatively easy and inexpensive to incorporate into one’s lifestyle. Consider the following, all of which can help to make you a better player.

Online Guitar Lessons

Everyone can benefit from taking guitar lessons when they are trying to learn more about their instrument in the beginning. Since music teacher jobs are far and few between, many teachers have taken to utilizing online services to help extend their services to students. Skype and other, similar services allow music teachers to connect with students even if they don’t live in the same area; perfect for those who are tired of making a commute. Online guitar lessons can be just as effective as those given in person, and should not be underestimated.

Modern Guitar Tuners

Tuning used to be relatively difficult, especially for those who don’t necessarily have trained ears. Modern guitar tuners, on the other hand, are extremely accurate and user-friendly. Shopping for a guitar tuner isn’t always easy, considering how many can be found on the market. Look for those that can tell the pitch of the instrument based upon vibration, as these can be clipped to the headstock of the instrument and used in both live and recording scenarios. While tuners can sometimes be expensive, having a high-quality instrument tuner on your side can make or break your ability to progress as a musician.

Play-Along Software

There are a variety of different types of software that can be configured to play a certain groove or chord progression on repeat. These can be looped and played over by musicians, and are ideal for those who are looking to get better at soloing. Perhaps the greatest thing about this type of software is that you can often find either freeware or shareware versions, which means those who are on a budget can utilize these programs without issue. Try out at least a few programs to determine which is best for you.

Absolutely buy a metronome. If you can’t play with a steady rhythm, all of your other efforts are wasted. Never practice without one.

Recently they came out with a Guitar Hero type video game that actually teaches guitar using your own instrument. A couple of my friends have had great success using the tool and it would make a worthy addition to your list!

YouTube alone I think has revolutionized the way we play and learn guitar. I remember being a college kid spending hours combing through the web to find guitar tabs that may or may not have been anything close to the real song. Now you can find a video for practically any song and watch how the guitarist actually performs it – step by step in many instances. This has been so valuable for me on the last few songs I’ve learned how to perform.

Many guitar players are often turned off by the idea of practicing technique and learning theory in an abstract non-musical way. The growth of any guitarist can be greatly improved by the simple awareness of the development of that growth.

But the critical thing is not finding static, rather growing
the weight as the earlier setting gets easy”.
